Feeling Afriad and sacred

Hi all I’m new to this forum,

So in July I had a irregular Pap smear and my smear came back as abnormal low grade changes. Positive with High risk hpv. Of course this was very frightening for me as I have always had normal Smears. Was told to do a colposcopy which I did in December. Received my results which the doctor told me cin1 , possible cin2. They said they were not able to get enough samples and would like to test again for cin2. Is this normal. Why wouldn’t they get enough sample from the first time.

Yes,it is quite normal. They are making sure they have an accurate result and not a false positive.

Maybe they didn't get a large enough sample. Or could be they think its more deep in the cervix. But dont worry cin2 is precancerous not exactly cancer yet. You may need a leep to remove abnormal cells but be assured they are doing their job very well by retesting. A lot of people have abnormal paps and leeps usually take care of an issue. How old are you?

    Hi Cay

    Your age is a factor...

Women under 30 are often hpv+...about 40% of women under 30 will be hpv+ but most clear it naturally by age 30. This is the reason why hpv testing is not recommended before age 30, it leads to worry, unnecessary biopsies etc,

Also, Pap testing does not help young women but leads to lots of over-treatment, that’s why Finland and The Netherlands don’t test women under 30.

if you’re over 30...then 5% of women aged 30 to 60 will be hpv+...this is the fairly small group of women with a small chance of benefiting from a 5 yearly Pap test. (until they test hpv-)

CIN 1 is nothing to worry about, CIN 2 and 3 are usually treated here in Australia, but keep in mind Cervical cancer is a fairly rare cancer with a lifetime risk of less than 1% so don’t panic...

i don’t test at all....hpv- women can’t benefit but can be harmed...and note...most women are hpv-...many of these women are having unnecessary Pap tests.

All screening should be evidence based, women should be given real information and should be free to make an informed decision, there’s less fear about this cancer when you understand the evidence, it’s strange, many women greatly fear cc but don’t worry about other rare cancers or even more common cancers. I think some women over-estimate the risk of cc because of the high levels of over-treatment caused by Pap testing, esp over-screening and early screening that produces high numbers of false positives (for no additional benefit to women)

hpv testing used the right way should see over- treatment rates plummet but sadly, most countries will build excess into hpv testing that won’t benefit women, things like hpv testing women under 30, testing too often etc. hpv self testing should also be freely available, some women cannot tolerate speculum exams esp. older women...most of these women will be hpv-...they could self test, if they’re hpv- and no longer sexually active, they might choose to forget all further testing. If they take a new partner, they might choose to self test for hpv again.

    all the best
