first time i have been on this site was hoping i could get some help with how to deal with depression at work. i am 36 years old and have suffered with depression for the last 16 years.was put back on my medication last july and things started to look up six moths ago i got a job and was so pleased after trying to get back into work for years. the problem was i found it difficult at first because i was trying to overcome issues ive had for years such as being in crowded places, change in routine and low confidence, but i felt i was dealing with them ok until i stopped taking my meds. im taking 150mg of sertraline a day and just stopped as i was so busy at work i couldnt get to see my doctor. i have became very down pretty quick and was having panic attacks and shaking and could not concentrate, i almost lost my job because my manager felt i had an attitude problem because i asked her stop shouting at me.i was coming home crying every night and getting worse i decided to explain my situation to her and now she keeps calling me stupid and weak. she has told evryone else i work with bout my problems and now people are avoiding me. i love my job and know when my meds start to work again ill be fine but im so embarrassed and upset now dont know what i can do.

Which country do you live in? And is there a manager above the vicious, insensitive moron you work for?

Well that's just discrimination, simple, and if there isn't a manager above the cow that's done this then i would complain to a 'head office' or whatever it is, to the main people, because if she continues making a hostile working environment for you and exacerbating your condition you could sue the company. She's effectively making it impossible for you to work there.

Honestly if you cant talk it out with her and try resolve this childish behaviour then take it above her head, if that doesn't work then go see a lawyer. You told her about this in confidence, she's already broken policies and procedures in ANY work place by divulging private information without your permission, she will know this by being in the position she is in, she's supposed to be there for you to talk to, kind of like a type of support.

Honestly read up on your human rights and work place rights, i know its arduous and you'll have to read through a lot before you find anything useful, but i promise you she's broken a shit load of policies and procedures that you could get your workplace in a lot of shit for.

Nobody should feel like that in a place of work, there's such a thing as professionalism and she's not being it.

I've been off work now for almost a month with panic attacks, anxiety and depression and my workplace has been nothing but supportive because that's what an employer should be, by law.

Your in a higher position of power right now and you don't even realise, you could alleviate a lot of your anxiety if you follow up on the advice because shed probably get her arse fired. I know you may be against getting someone fired but look at what she's doing to you. Its not fair at all.

    Hope this helps anyway.

    Hi Gemma

I can't believe your manager has acted so inappropriately what a horrible person there must be someone above them that you can go and report her failure to support you at this time I understand why you didn't think you needed your meds I have done that a few times when I think I'm fine I'm not surprised you felt so bad just stopping first thing to do is go back to your doctor and restart the medication again and return to work and inform your manager that you are not stupid or weak and tell her she is unprofessional as a manager,, try not to take much notice of staff there if they can't deal with this knowledge and show some support to you then don't bother with them depression is an illness where all the awful other side affects such as anxiety low self esteemed panic attacks come together and it's really hard to deal with in the beginning until you get help and medication and that takes time the fact that she shouted at you actually shows she has no skills to be in that job, don't let her vicious remarks get to you, because you know you can do that job well you just need to be a bit better organised about getting your meds, try and make your appointments in advance so you don't run out,I get a repeat prescription on a six month basis then I gave to see the doctor again this way I never run out I just ring the doctors and ask for a prescription. Well done for getting a job I know it's really hard and when you have issues it's difficult to get beyond them and concentrate on learning new things but you can do it once you get back on track again. I had a really stressful job and struggled with an extremely unprofessional manager who constantly told me I was doing things wrong in the end I had a breakdown trying to please her which was impossible because she kept changing policies without telling me I was covering three peoples hours as she would not allow me to get cover I was working 12 hours a day it's not surprising I had a breakdown one morning I just couldn't walk in the door and went straight to my doctors, he knew I was having a tough time so signed me if for a month when he put work related stress on my certificate that was the start of a long battle and in the end I finally left because my health was more important that was 5 years ago she is now doing the same thing to my deputy who took over from me,she has now been off work for three months with stress. How do these people ever get those jobs they have no idea of how to treat people don't let your manager win this situation keep your head up there are many people who suffer with this illness it's debilitating but manageable with medication but there are to many people who make judgements on depression, I wonder how they would deal with it.

Take care and look after yourself
