feeling low and moody after my heart bypass

its been 6 months since my quad heart bypass in hammersmith hospital (7th march 2013) and all though im looking great and feeling healthy im suffering with the worst mood swings ever. they started shortly after my op but now im suffering with irratability and even some angry moments to the point of melt down.it doesnt matter what i say its the impact of what i am saying and how im feeling after i say these terrible things. my family have had enough.ive read that this can be normal after a bypass operation so i have googled forums but only seem to find sites based in america.

the other feelings i have are regret and blame. im concidering organising my funeral now from fear of leaving everyone suddenly. the list is endless. my gp is checking my bloods as ive started some new meds recently but has anyone else had these experiances too? and how did you and your loved ones cope? i was 45 when i had my operation and going to cardio rehab really didnt help my mind state.

    Hi Jon,

Sorry for the late reply...I've only just joined this site. My father, having never suffered mood swings or any form of depression prior to his operation appears to be going through the same thing after having his triple by-pass. I wish we could have been prepared for the fact that he would go into some form of depression and it's as though the medical staff play this down in their pamphlets/ advice. Nearly everyone I spoke to who had had some form of heart operation seems to have had some form of post operative depression lasting well over a year plus. The body has been under huge stress....it is a major operation you've had to go through. Stress can alter some of the body's chemicals out of kilter causing depression and it does sound as though you have depression.....that's part of the symptoms - having feelings of guilt, regrets, rage, anger. All family and others seem to see are the displays of anger etc towards them, not realising that this is what depression is. For some people, it isn't weeping buckets. Please see doctor if these feelings are still there today. It doesn't always just go away on its own and may need a helping hand. Please keep in touch and let us know how you're getting on.

i think it is depression also,do not forget you have been through the mill mate and you will feel bitter and annoyed and if your family is anything like mine you will be driven mental by the are you ok and take it easy dont do this dont do that i wish they had given me a bypass when i had my heart attack age 45,but no a plethera of drugs really mess your head up make you sick and four angiograms so traumatic i will not even go for a blood test now i am that scared of needles and need to go for them 15 admissions to hospital and for long stays if they had done a bypass i would be fit now and not having to panic everytime the angina wakes me from sleep, but back to you please go easy on your family they mean well and always remember it could have gone the other way and you may not be here now good luck x

    Hello Jon

Like yourself I'm struggling to find a UK forum. I'm due to have a triple CABG at Hammersmith in 10 days and was wondering if your experience there was a good one?

I hope that your depression has gone?

    Regards

    Mike
