Feeling much better - how long can it last?!!!

Just posting a quick update;

Been on Citalopram 20mg for just over 5 weeks, and one moring I suddenly woke up feeling like a total stranger - happy, peaceful, confident. what on earth has happened, I thought??!! God bless medication!

Have any of you longer term users experienced burn out later on? Also, I was dreading putting on weight with them - I was eating for England before, so with the decreased appetite I've lost some weight, not sure how much, but have just started exercising again to keep them working, and to lose some more weight.

Overall - yeehah!!!!!!!! I feel bloomin' marvellous!!

    this makes me feel hopeful!

I was eating like an elephant before as well ... and now the thought of food makes me want to vomit! which isn't so great but at least the weight might drop off - as weight was the final nail in the coffin for my depression!

Joyce, I a have been on 20mg of Citalopram for 3 weeks and am still waiting for a result. I took 10mg before that for 2 weeks and I have just been put up to 30mg today. What dose are you on? I am still waiting for my depression to lift and am feeling no benefit at the moment. YOu have given me some hope. Did it just suddenly happen or was it a gradual thing.

Hi Arial, I was on 10mg for 2 wks, then the dose was increased to 20mg, which was what I'm on now.

The first 2 wks on 10mg didn't seem to help, then around the end of the first week on 20mg I noticed a slight improvement - increased energy, not desperate to sleep all the time, improved mood. Then about a week later I suddenly woke up feeling amazingly well (for me!!) - more confident, sustained energy levels, able to face people and tasks I just couldn't have before.

Do stick with it, I know just before I took the first pill I scoured this website for positive feedback - and it is there! Yyes, there can be problems in the early stages, but many people have found it works for them. Hang on in there, and just know that you're not alone, and you will come through.

joyce thanks for getting back to me. I am just so miserable. Its Friday night, my husband just poured himself a beer and that just made me cry just not even being able to face having a drink thats when you know how low you have got. I do keep hoping these pills will come right for me but its an awful waiting game. Communication and affection are virtually impossible with anyone close to me, this has a devasting affect on everyone really. I am making myself do things because I have to fill the time somehow, but nothing is enjoyable. the only thing I really look forward to going to bed at least you are peaceful when you are sleeping.......and then comes another day!!!!!

I've been on Citalopram for about 3 months now (20mg) - the first week or two I felt tired shortly after taking the tablet, but now I feel fine, so positive and relaxed - back to my old self (before the depression, that is). I know that there are many people who have posted that it doesn't appear to work for, but fortunately that's not my experiance. Whatever course you choose to take, I hope it all works out well for you.

    Best wishes,

    Keith

sad hi have just been prescribed citalopram. am wary of taking them because of the side effects. excactly what side effects have people experienced...and how severe??

look forward to your advice thanks aly

    Hi Aly,

Well, YMMV as they say, but my side effects were: a slightly jittery, light-headed feeling, nausea, slight problems with sleeping, awful grumbly tummy, and tiredness. The tiredness really struck about a week before I finally picked up on them, I'd do something quite simple like go out to get more petrol, come back, and just crash out. V strange.

However, I must say that I disregarded my GPs advice totally and carved off bits of the pills so I actually built up to current dose of 20mg quite slowly. A friend is just starting on Citalopram and she's done it more quickly and felt a bit worse than I did, but I expect she'll get the positive effect more quickly than I did!

At the end of the day, its your decision which path you want to take, but I must say, don't be put off by any comments on this board, cos we're all so different!

    All the best,

    Joyce

Ocassionaly , I get a bit panicky....but thats nothing compared to before. I have been on 20mg for approx 6 months. You have to find what suits YOU best.....whatever you do , do not give up hope!!!!! No matter what happens, its worth fighting the illness!!!!You know you can do it!!!1Take care! :D
