Feeling of Hip Catching

Posted , 4 users are following.

I’m 13 wks post op on my left THR. I had my right done almost 15 months ago.

Ever since I’ve been working on strengthening my left hip my right hip has been getting sore. Understood because I’ve been using it more now in place of the left.

I also feel like the hip on the right catches on something when I have put pressure on it ....say when I’m leaning on it to exercise the left. Or if standing and just leaning on it. It’s very bothersome and a bit painful. Sometimes it takes a couple times for it to go away. Like something needs to go back into place. I feel it in the groin area up near the upper part of it.

Does anyone know what this could be? I’m thinking that I may not have strengthened my right hip as much after that replacemen as I could or should have. I found it difficult sometimes as I was experiencing alot of pain on the left already.

    Hi

I'm new to this site but have a serious relationship with a traumatised Psoas muscle complex and would like to share some of what I have found out about it

So just a thought - have you considered checking this muscle out. Basically it's the large muscle in your groin that lifts your leg when you walk.

it's actually the illipsoas muscle complex and consists of originally three muscles (but now four as they apparently found another part of it in early 2000s). Anyway once you start investigating it you will see there are numerous areas that it can affect - from your nose to your toes.

The best on the Psoas is Dr Aileen Jefferis. She's in Adelaide and her Doctoral thesis was awarded  on 'The Role of the illiopsoas muscle in chronic spinal pain and associated signs and symptoms.

Here's a couple of comments from sites:

"A person suffering from IlioPsoas syndrome may have pain in the hip and thigh region, as well as hip stiffness and in some cases a clicking or snapping hip.(http://www.wenningpt.com/iliopsoas.html) has some good pics

"The psoas is a very important hip flexor. When this tendon becomes inflamed or irritated, it causes pain in the hip, which is usually felt in the groin or inner thigh. The psoas can also become inflamed following a total hip replacement. - (http://www.arthrohealth.com.au/psoas-tendinopathy/)

An interesting internet search to do is -  psoas osteoarthritis  or psoas imbalance

Also search images for psoas and also illipsoas trigger points and referred pain patterns or even just illipsoas referred pain patterns  gives lots of info as well in regard to what it can affect.

May be someting to talk to your doctor about as a possibility to look at.

    Cheers wink

Thanks Hiddenculprit. Will look it up.

I didn’t mention to my doc this past week as I’ve been trying to get him to my new replacement. Been having problems there. I will see him again in 6 weeks. Hoping this issue has gone away by then.

It would be a good idea to see a doctor for XRAY and diagnosis. maybe some PT could take care of the issue or in many cases the second hip has osteoarthritis too.

    Good luck

Oh sorry I misunderstood both hips were done. So sorry.

its always such a struggle after hip replacement and I have had both done and one had a revision. I would suggest asking your doctor so many things could be the issue. Healing takes time and strengthing exercises helps . In some cases the pain can be unnerving and between a doctor and PT time and patience and take it easy trying to not overdo. Ice the area, pain meds to help relax the area, rest, water therapy and walking no bending all work out eventually to the long journey to healing and getting our lives back past the constant pain and on to a better quality of life!

Many healing blessings sent your way😊

Thank you Hope4cure. After 15 months I would think plenty of healing has been done. But do you mean because I probably didn’t strengthen it as much as I could have back a year ago?

Just suggesting ways to help & sharing all the things I went thru that helped me thru 3 hip replacements. It takes time to heal.I went to PT off and on for over a year first hip. Started PT 4 days after surgery. My 1st Hip OP had so many healing problems. The I band had tiny tears very painful with a whole list of other issues. Some times other things can complicate healing. I had to wait 6 months and was in a wheel chair before surgery.

My goal is to support and help others who have bravely been thru hip replacement by sharing what has helped me thru three hip replacements. I have learned so much from many others who have shared their knowledge, advice and experiences. I am thankful for this forum.

      Sending healing wishes your way!💐

Hope4cure what is the I band you mentioned?

Are you talking about the IT band? I think I may have a problem with that with my current hip replacement. Very painful and can’t bend my knee. Finally talked doc into trying physical therapy tho I don’t think he thinks it’s the IT band.

The IT BAND is complicated and injury is common after surgery. It runs from girdling the hip down to the knee. I was lucky and PT helped and can  get you back on track. Also core strengthening is a huge part of gaining strength it's connected to helping strength while IT band is healing.

Some people under go IT band release surgery. Google it for, further info.
