Hi Kelly, I still feel shattered for a day-or-so after giving blood and tend to just sleep it off. At first I felt a bit queasy/dizzy after the venesections but I think that was more just a symptom of not especially liking needles as opposed to anything 'medical' going on. After 8 months of weekly venesections I'm near enough doing them myself now-09

kelly18948,
I feel a bit tired for about 24 hours after venesections. I try to rest but sometimes I have to work but I feel a bit feeble, nothing more.
I have never felt dizzy, but when I have had my blood pressure checked before and after venesections it is always the same - the low end of average which is normal for me and I think this helps.
My haemoglobin is the high end of average and I think this helps too.
To cope better with the treatment (my first couple of times were truly awful) I do the following which I find helpful:
- Always have the venesection in the afternoon (the body is more dehydrated in the morning)
- Build good relationships with the staff
- Drink plenty of water the day before and on the day of the venesection
- Work from home in the morning (it is less stressful)
- Leave early to go to the clinic so I don't have to worry about traffic, parking etc.
- Have a nice lunch and drink and read for a while before going in to the clinic
- Go in to the clinic a bit early, settle down and read and drink some more
- Have anaesthetic cream put on the site of the venesection 20 minutes or so before
- Do a relaxation while it is happening (this is challenging)
- Wait for 10 minutes before getting up and leaving
- I usually go home, have supper, watch a movie and go to bed early
- Get up a bit later than usual the next morning and go in to work a bit late
I find this works for me. It is not a pleasant experience so I just try to do the most that I can that is within my control.
I hope you can find a way of making it a bit better for you.
