Feeling rubbish six weeks after thr

Posted , 30 users are following.

hi everybody, I had new hip six weeks ago walking very well but still feel awful very tired as not been able to sleep for more than three to four hours in the night and constant trips to the loo, even though I have not had a drink after 7pm, I don't remember feeling so lethargic when I had my other hip done 8 years ago.  I still need the odd painkiller solpadol usually or paracetamol, any tips out there to get my energy and sleep pattern back to normal, I have tried sleeping tabs they only last three to four hours, I find it too difficult to sleep on side as yet, what a pickle I have got myself into, oh by the way I am 73.

Oh I feel your pain! 6 1/2 weeks out here post surg and still struggling every day... With sleep with energy… All of the above. Lucky to be dressed and coherent by noon, then a few good hours until early evening when the pain kicks up and energy flags.

And yes still pain meds also occasionally for a little bit every day. Have to remember this is major surgery, and it takes at least a full three months before one begins to feel vaguely human again!

This is of course easy to say, and very difficult to live. 😫 Part of the daily practice is gentleness with ourselves as well as deep compassion for our bodies which have been through so much, and frankly are putting all their energy into healing.

That make any sense to any of you?

Yes I get up around 7am having be laying awake but not wanting to disturb my husband.. pain is bad by this time so I get up have a coffee or 2, and my hand full of pain meds.   By 9.30am I am back on the bed do my exercises and fall asleep for anything 1 - 2.5 hrs.. This keeps me going through the day   If I have to miss this sleep then the afternoon I crash in my chair.

Quick question to you wise hippies, are you still using ice for pain or now switching to heat?

      Hi celine

i am 13 weeks  post op and because of complication nerve damage, still seeing Physio.  She is always icing me and telling me to ice at home - anything that hurts/aches which can be ankles, front hip muscles on left of my left hip or adductors from knee to groin which had tendinitis therein.  So yes yes ice away!  They say 3-4 times a day for 5-10 minutes plus raise hip leg.  Sleeping still uncomfortable, not so much peeing but I sleep on my side naturally and whichever side I fall asleep on groans and semi wakes me up as I turn, and turn, and turn again.  Still now can feel pads of my toes (no motor nerve to toes yet) but who cares my brain finally senses I have a foot and balance is now getting there!!

    Oh Ann,

this operation is as many say extremely brutal, and it does "take it out of you".  I am a mere 64, and I found it very tiring and hard to recover from, so at 73, I'm not surprised you are more tired than last time.

Like many others, I'm not a patient patient, perhaps you are too, we all seem to think that we should be recovering more quickly than we are doing.

Remember, it is a hard physical and emotional roller coaster ride, so take your time, and remember that slowly and carefully wins the race.

Found your post very reassuring.I am also 64 and very active so finding recovery much harder and longer than I expected.Walking is great but sleeping still a problem. As you say patience is a virtue!!

I think that is one of the wonderful things about this forum, the help and reassurance that we all need, just when we need it most.

      Best wishes

Oh no!!! I was so sore as I had to sleep only on my back! I thought I would end up with bed sores! I slept like a log actually from day one, but like you say the getting up to urinate is the pits! I needed help to get up each and every time! My poor daughter had me at her place for the whole month of May and she did most everything for me and I was and am so grateful! She has no stairs and I have thirteen steps whether I come and go inside or outside and I was afraid I would fall as husband works nights awndbi would have been alone all night she said no way!!! I am doing so wonderful now! Still have numbness on outside of hip and front of thigh! Small thing to have now after what I went through!

Are you eating well??? I know my daughter made me eat and it got my energy up so that could be one thing...and take naps!!! I would cat nap in a chair and sitting up felt nice to sleep it took the pressure off my upper and lower back and butt! I also have MS, Diabetes, and fibromyalgia! So I am fighting more than one thing at a time! But rest rest rest and eat to get energy level up! Hope this helps!!!

    hi ann,

how are you doing ?  I am chiming in with the choir here -

there is nothing wrong with you as you can see -

I have learned that to just accept that it is okay to feel lethargic, tired, exhausted, useless, sad, etc. is just what is - without judging yourself or beating your self up or, especially, not compare your self to other and not even to yourself -

I had my 2nd THR surgery 6 months after my 1st one and thought the 1st one was so much less painful ---

we also tend to forget that the period (sometimes years) of pain preceding the surgery has also taken out a lot of our body ...

as for hoovering - I bought a cordless Dyson - very lightweight - I also live alone and started to  vacuum around week 4 (against the rules) - just staying upright and just the surface - making my bed, changing linens, is still a challenge -

After 2nd THR I had a wonderful lady come in every weak who would clean for me and it was worth every penny -

don't be so hard on your self - you are really doing great -

    big warm hug

You were much younger after your last surgery. That makes a big difference to your stamina, energy levels and strength.

I am 5 weeks post op. I sleep in 3 hour increments. I know this is the pattern and do not expect to get a full night's sleep for a while yet. At first I was frustrated because I was tired but then once you abandon your expectations it gets easier.

I was lucky that I could sleep on my unoperated side pretty much right away. After a couple weeks I gingerly tried my operated side and could last maybe 15 seconds. I kept trying a little bit every day. There is still lumpy scar tissue and swelling which feels weird but it's getting better.

There were points where I was close to tears about sleeping so I just lay down flat on my tummy. It felt really good. Couldn't sleep like that but it was a few minutes of bliss.

It WILL get better. Hang in there!

    Hi Ann

I encourage you to see your GP and ask for a blood test to check your B, B12, iron and magnesium levels plus others which might be affecting you. This surgery drains you and sometimes affects our appetites so that we don't eat as nutritionally as needed after a trauma like this.

I wish you better progress and some happiness in your life.

I wonder if you have a UTI. I picked up Citrobacter Koseri from catheter post op. Bactrim Forte cleared it in 5 days. Similar symptoms to yours.

i am post op day 3 and feeling totally awful. hoping i feel less stiff and shaky soon. showered in the hospital yesterday and was released that evening. i'm completely paranoid about the wound and that i have inadvertently damaged the hip by twisting or moving without thinking. i know I have to walk and do the exercises but need to get past the anxiety of doing so. does anyone else feel similar?
