Feeling so fed up, my own fault yoyo'ing with dose

Hi everyone

I was on 10 mgs citalopram for several years for health anxiety, had a scare back then but all turned out to be ok. Felt good so decided to come off cold turkey, that was almost a year ago. Huge mistake cos I haven't been right since. I have been trying to settle on a dose, have tried going back on 10, then 5, then 7.5, then 10 and now 7.5 for the past 6 weeks. I am still getting what I presume are withdrawal/start up effects, Sometimes I feel like I need to lie down before I fall down especially when I am feeling stressed (although I never have collapsed). I was though starting to get some good days but had flu/pneumonia jab two weeks ago and have been worse since. Increased anxiety, headaches, neck and shoulder aches, dizziness, zombie like feeling. The problem is I don't know if cit will work for me again. The jabs have definitely made me feel worse. Anyone any advice please? Thanks for reading๐Ÿ˜Š

A/D's work best for people with a chemical inbalance of the brian and if you look at the rates at which these drugs are dished out you can see that something drastic has changed. The human brain has been evolving for millions of years, yet over two or so decades we are looking for a magical answer and why we are all popping pills . GP's hand them out like toffees now because its quick, lazy and better more suited mental health services have been slashed to the bone. I take Citalopram, it works for me but its not a magic pill and neither is it for my father. Playing around with doses in my opinion is a non starter but hoping a tiny little white pill will solve your problems isn't either. 5mg/7.5mg/10mg are small doses of a powerful drug. Anxiety is horrific but worrying about 2.5mg's here or there is just your illness playing tricks with your mind. You could take 40mg and be worrying about something else. I'd say you would be far better getting a decent therapist, if your in the UK you now refer yourself to your mental health team called minds matter (you can get a leaflet from your doctors). It takes far more discipline, a lot more effort and life changes and isn't perfect, I've been getting homework each week for gods sake, I've not had that in over 20 years. To expect a pill regardless of dosage to work miracles doesn't work imo, you need to understand what A'D's actually do and how they work. Exercise, therapy, eating well, little alcohol and all the boring things are the way forward. Much harder but if you engage far more beneficial, i said brutal but its the truth and thats coming from someone who relies on medication.

      Hi

Thank you for taking the time to reply with your thought provoking response.

I think my foolish actions have probably induced a paradoxical reaction to the med, to my detriment.

I shall have to ride it out I guess.

Wishing you and your father good health.

      Kind regards

Lina, most of what's causing your wobble is your switching around the dosage. I think you should now just stay where you are, regardless of how you feel, and really focus on the other things whodareswins mentions. Diet, exercise, sleep, relaxation, meditation and some therapy if you can.

I'm into week 13 at 10mg and finally beginning to feel good again, but that whole period through June to end of August was hellish, whilst I was muddling around with dosage,, some people are sensitive to dose increase/decrease, even tiny ones.

My personal view is that you can 'recover' on ANY dose and low doses are a lot more effective than previously thought....it's just that we tend to think we will get better faster on a higher dose, which is not the case a lot of the time.

I still get a few blips here and there, the thing is, anti ds arent a magic bullet. Just ride out the blips. They will eventually get shorter.

    Sending you good wishes ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

    Hi Ruth

Thank you for your encouraging advice. I'm still on 7.5 and still hoping each day I wake up that I will feel relatively normal again. I think I am overly sensitive to dosage changes as I am with other meds. I cannot take paracetamol or ibruprofen and some antibiotics for example.

I know you have had a wobbly ride too from your previous posts, we have spoken before and you have helped me in the past. I'm so pleased for you that you are starting to feel well again.

I can't help wondering though whether there is something else going on with me like adrenal fatigue brought on by stress over a long period of time. I am concentrating on my diet to see if if makes a difference.

    Best wishes๐Ÿ˜Š

    Hi Lina

I found any slight changes of citalopram affected me, I was so sensitive to them. I tried to take them the same time every day, if I went a few hours over the due time, I would get symptoms. As soon as I started tapering, everything went crazy for me. You need to give your system a chance to settle on your existing dose, before making any changes.

    All the best with this.

      Hi Paula

Thanks for replying. I think the vaccines I had were a set back for me too. My anxiety was heightened after them. I'm feeling a little better lately, not so much dizziness now, the occasional headache and muzzy head feeling. I'm trying to keep my dose as accurate as possible 7.5 but I don't always take them the exact same time. Maybe that has had an effect on me too. I need to focus on this more.

How are you doing since you stopped citalopram? I know you were getting some horrible symptoms. Have they improved since stopping? Hope you are feeling better.

      Best wishes ๐Ÿ˜Š

      Hi Lina, thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Have been signed off work since beginning of the month, the withdrawal has been horrible and have struggled to physically function. Am determind and a bit stubborn have been refusing all meds to help me through it, I definitely feel hke I am over the worst. Alot of my symptoms have disappeared, time will tell. I seem to be different to alot of people on here, celexa didnt agree with me, although I am aware that they help alot of people and were a lifesaver for me years ago.

hang in there! and be careful when it comes to coffee, alcohol, herbal remedies etc for any interractions.

      Hi Paula

I'm so happy for you that a lot of your symptoms have gone and you are over the worst. You've really had a challenging time of it over the months from what I can remember so it's great to hear you sounding so positive and determined. It's good you have some time off from work too to focus on getting better, I hope you continue to get stronger each day.

Thanks for the tip about supplements, I've tried many but haven't found any benefits, I'm concentrating on good diet instead, both alcohol and coffee free.

Take care Paula, you truly are an inspiration to all.๐Ÿ’
