Feeling so ill and sick of my GP practice.

Hi all, Convinced i have gallbladder problems doctor wont listen!!!

Just joined today and looking for help please.I've not felt well since October infact i've felt very unwell my symptoms started after being out all day on my motorbike, that night when going to bed i put my head on the pillow and got a horible cramping feeling in my neck and thought i'd strained something riding my motorbike. A couple of days later i woke up with a terrible burning pain in my upper back which i left for a couple of weeks before going to my gp, i decided to go as i still had this pain and was feeling very off. My gp ran loads of blood tests and everything was normal apart from my liver lft's were 55 normal range up to 50. He wasn't to worried though as it was 55 five years previously and i'm a little overweight. After another couple of weeks everything went away.

I then started with a continuos pain in my right side in January that has never gone away. In March one evening while watching telly i got a horrible burning sensation just slightly above and to the right of my belly button for about 10mins. A couple of nights later i got a severe pain in my chest and a couple of days after that i woke up with a severe burning that went right across my upper back. Ever since then my upper back pain has been continuous particulary in my left shoulder blade it's that bad it's like someone pushing their thumb into my back. Since March i've also felt nauseous and lightheaded. I feel particulary nauseous after a bowel movement and break out in a cold sweat. I'm also getting a ballooning feeling in my right side, and constant gurling in throat.

So symptoms

Pain in right side continuos since January.

Upper back pain continuos since March.

Nausea continuos since March.

Nausea and cold seats after bowel movement continuos since March.

Lightheadedness continuos since March.

Gurgling in throat continuos since March.

I've been to my gp probably 10 times since March and said i'm really feeling very unwell and had to ask for every single test i've had so far and suggested everything to him when he's the doctor. I asked for an ultrasound right from the off in March and didn't get referred for six weeks. No blood tests offered until i asked. Gvien Omeprazole and Cyclizine.I asked to try an IBS med but made no difference.

Test results from ultrasound of gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas and kidneys normal and all blood tests normal.

I went back to my gp Monday and even had to ask for referral to the hospital because i know ultrasounds are not 100% reliable and my gp said i will referr for you pice of mind but i dont think it's your gallbladder, oh yeah well what is it then doc. I even asked for a chest x ray and at my local hospital you can get that immediately if you go with a form from your gp but no he's done a refferal for that.

Things i've done is only eaten tuna in spring water, healthy living soups, veg, salad, and fat free yoghurts since March and it's made absolutely no difference to my symptoms. I've lost 3 1/2 stone in these 3 months.

Sorry for the massively long post but i've never felt so ill and i'm worried, scared and frustrated.

My husband struggled for 10yrs with gall bladder symptoms all the specialists said NO FINDINGS to support gall bladder, NO stones and what WAS wrong DID NOT SHOW UP ON IMAGING....they did mri, ultrasound &etc...the little change in Liver enzymes was all there was....let me tell you: he passed out in our yard one day from the pain...we went to hospital and they tried to brush us off, we insisted they do an exploratory scope, THEY sent us to another specialist (a surgeon)....he went in and found my husband's gall bladder so DISEASED, it was the WORST he had ever seen, he said I don't know how you lived like that...in another few weeks it would have ruptured or he would have had sepsis....I am NOT saying this is what YOU have but you know your body best if YOU have SYMPTOMS, THERE'S A REASON....keep trying!!! I feel for you..this is frustrating, painful & messes up your life.....Best Wishes and Hope you find your answer soon, hang in there💙sorry I can't do more for you💟

Thanks so much for replying. Wow that's bad with your husband! Glad he's sorted! This has been going on for nearly 7 months but i've not felt well for 10 months. Luckily i'm in a position not to work at the mo, i don't know how people carry on working and looking after children full time feeling like this!

      Thanks

I am so glad that your husband's condition was caught in time! Doctors can be so arrogant and basically idiotic, can't they?

Best to you and your husband!

Very annoyed today, my partner saw her brother in law yesterday and he said he thinks i need to see pscyhciatrist!!! Then i had my Mum on the phone last night saying things like i need to start getting on with things, i've had all tests, what am i going to do about it and so on! Well we all know i haven't had all the tests! It confirms to me what i thought peoole are thinking that it's all in my head! I've done pretty much nothing this summer and i would normaly be out with my son all the time, fishing or out on my motorbike. How can upper back pain, flank pain, constant nausea, lightheadedness be all in my head!

      Rant over!

I hope you get some answers soon, wish I could have been more help...I didn't mean to scare you or make you feel worse, I just wanted you to know sometimes it takes Dr's time to figure things out and to not give up trying, you shouldn't have to just accept it...they need to help you Best Wishes💙

Thank you Lynda...yes there are some Dr's who you just wanna say shove your diplomas LOL Best Wishes to you & yours as well💟

I went through the "it's all in your head" thing too...long story but I went back and read your other posts....your Dr would not like me LOL a few things occurred to me, first if you had a herniated disc and this started after your active day..your back can be the cause, muscle spasms, radiating pain & one herniated disc can mean others (new or undiagnosed at the time)also a large percentage of ulcers are caused by H.pylori bacteria (which they can test for) and must be treated with anti-biotics also you should try an acid blocker, Nexium is a PPH so it pushes food through faster, things like Ranitidine are H2 blockers(weaker version OTC) and help with stomach acid, you can take them together...a urine and stool test would not be unreasonable, sometimes having two separate issues can make symptoms hard to diagnose as they don't fit together?!?...I am not a doctor, I was going to med school but got hurt at work before I could go, all I read is mostly medical & my Dr says I should BE a Dr (and he's not joking) so I don't know everything & any doctor(other than PAST HISTORY) that says ANYTHING is 100% accurate/successful/risk-free is a liar, with one exception: a big belly & an ultrasound that SHOWS a baby is accurate...We have had so much medical stuff, just our family could keep a small clinic in business, Good Luck...hope you get your answer soon Best Wishes💙

I know how you feel Matt.

Years ago I started getting bilateral joint pains in my hand, wrists, elbows, feet and ankles. GP suspected rheumatoid arthritis and referred me to a rheumatologist. I had tests. I was told 'it's definitely not rheumatoid arthritis'. I asked what he thought it might be. He just shrugged! I suffered pains for years and still get them, though not nearly as bad as I used to. It felt like he thought it was all in my head. I've never been one for running to the GP over every sniffle. Sometimes I never saw a doctor for several years, so when I am ill, I expect to be believed and taken seriously. I never have got to the bottom of what caused those pains. I know that cold and damp aggravated them. Have to say they paled into insignificance once my gallbladder flared up. Never known pain like it.

You just have to persevere and pester the doctors until someone takes notice. My joint pains weren't life threatening but ignoring a sick gallbladder can be.

Hi Matt, sorry I've just seen this. The only reason to see a pscyhciatrist for would be to speak about how this is getting you down. I'm seeing a therapist on Friday as recommended by the pain clinic as being in pain for such a long time reallly has an effect on your life.

I certainly don't think that you're making it up, unfortunately some are unable to understand as its alot easier to give compassion if you've got a broken bone.

How are you getting on with speaking to the gastro's secretary, I would speak to her to see if you're getting another appointment to see him. You do need to have a hida scan the rule out your gallbladder. I was also given a test for addisons disease as the symptoms are similar and it effects the adrenal glands on the kidneys so right near the gallbladder. Its rare but my doctors wanted to rule it out.

If you're normally an active person and your life has changed dramatically then you've certainly got something going on. I know what missing a summer is like, I couldn't do anything last summer.

Let me know whats happening. Take care x

Hi Katherine, Good luck with your therapist appointment tomorrow. Well i phoned the gastro's secretary and she couldn't tell me anything i've just got to wait for my letter. This is the same letter that i would still be waiting for to find out my CT results! Luckily i badgered the secretary all last Friday to email to my GP so i could at least get them from my GP. If i hadn't i would still be waiting, it's a total joke! So i went to my GP last Friday, phoned 111 Sunday as i felt so rough and my partner made me phone. I phoned my GP surgery yesterday for a phone call appointment as i've felt so lightheaded and rough. It was a new GP and she was lovely and sympathetic and said i should come to the surgery for an emergency appointment and booked me one. It was the same GP that i saw last Friday and i was made to feel like one big pain in the arse and was in and out within 3 minutes.

Hi Matt, sorry I've only just got back to you. The appointment was ok but I find it very hard to speak to someone that appears so young, not that I doubt her qualifications its just easier to speak to someone who's similar age.

After I had my CT my gastro put me in for a mrcp then the hida scan, it took about 3 months from my ct scan but I did get to speak to my gastro inbetween time.

Its terrible being in so much pain all the time, I do feel for you. Have they given you some decent pain relief, I had cocodamol and naproxen which was fine for mild pain but didn't do anything when the pain was bad. Just keep going back to your gp or to a&e if the pain is really bad at least they'll give you some stronger pain relief for a while. There should be a gastro team on call at a&e in your hospital, I know there is in my hospital.

How are you feeling today? Are you managing to work or are you signed off sick? I'm self employed  and found it very difficult.

Let me know how you are. Take care xx

I totally agree with you. I have been reading your topic last night and feel for you!! Hopefully you will find out what it is. Don't listen to people saying it is in your head or to see psychiatrist. They are not in your shoes and it is easy to say things like that when you don't have symptoms . Keep pushing your doctor to get what you need . When is the result of CT scan? Hopefully it will shed more light and they will be able to find out the reason.

Thanks so much! CT scan results were normal. Luckily my partner has been great as she see's how i feel everyday and that's all that matters to me. My family should know that i avoid anything medical and because of that i've just put up with pain in the past!

Do you or have you had gallbladder problems?

    • Posted

Did you hear anything back from gastroenterologist? Get appointment with GP again and asks for the test that was mentioned here about the function of your gallbladder! Moan as much as possible , go there all the time, because no one would care if you don't . I don't feel ashamed going to doctors even if it is minor problem. I am originally from another country and I'm shocked with the NHS here.. I'm lucky I got good GP this time, who is really trying to help but others that I have been too are useless. They don't think outside the box, they should be more enthusiastic in their job to find what it is. I don't understand why there is no any sort of curiosity from their side? At my work I'm always trying to deliver more than expected (I'm in investment management). I think everyone should be like that, try to find the reason, be interested and be supportive to your patients.

In my case I don't have severe pains , I just get sore ULQ and URQ but it is more like a dull pain and I get very itchy hands and feet. I'm not jaundice though. I went to GP yesterday, they took blood test today for liver function and others which I didn't remember. I am waiting a call from hospital to get an appointment for ultrasound. Everything is so slow here... in the country where I am from you can get whatever you want done on the same day for money however it is not expensive there.

I was thinking that I better go to GP now rather than waiting when it will get really bad... I'm going to ask them to do everything to find out the pain including endoscopy to see inside what is going on with my pancreas and gallbladder.

I was ill with hepatitis A when I was small. Does anyone know if it is for life now or my liver would have been regenerated by itself ?

    • Posted

Sorry to hear you are having medical issues, I know how frustrating that can be...Hepatitis A is a virus, it can do damage to the liver but only while you have the disease, the virus can go away on its own and you are supposed to be immune to it once you have had it...Hopefully you get answers soon and they can get you feeling better...Best Wishes Sweetheart💟

Thanks very much for your answers. Yeah hepatitis of any type are no good. I wish I knew before that you can get vaccination from it.

I woke up today and again starting to get itchy on palms of my hands and sole of my feet. It is funny but it is never itchy when I am sleeping, only when I awake.. hopefully the blood test will show something or otherwise would need to rule out every possible condition of itchying. It might be the case that it is two different conditions (pains and itchiness)

Hi sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Nope i've heard nothing from the gastro it's pathetic it really is! I know for a fact that the gastro department had my CT scan results back from the radiologogist 10 days ago and i've heard nowt! I do know that the CT was normal as i hasseled the secretary at the hospital to send the results to my gp so i could find out from them. It's pathetic to think that the gastro has no idea that i know my CT scan results yet i've heard nothing and lets be honest it's an anxious wait for people when cancer is crossing your mind! It will be 2 weeks tomorrow that i had my CT so i will be interested to see if i hear anything this week!

I asked the gastro about getting a HIDA scan and was told i wouldn't get one as my ultrasound and bloods were normal, so now i've had a normal CT i'm expecting to get fobbed off!

I've pestered my gp surgery for nearly six months now and been twice in the last 10 days and they are really making me feel that i'm pestering them now. My partner even phoned nhs111 last Sunday as i felt that unwell. Not sure what else i can do. I've seen three different gp's now at my surgery including my regular gp who at the start of June told me it isn't my gallbladder which gives me grounds to sue in my eyes.

Good luck with your ultrasound. It took my gp nearly 7 weeks to reffer me for one but once he did i had it within 10 days, so it shouldn't take long.

Following my liver resection in early March, due to gallbladder cancer, I was supposed to see my consultant within two weeks, according to my discharge letter. Rang when two weeks were almost up and no appointment had come through and was told all appointments had been cancelled for April and eventually an appointment came through for May. It was a long time to wait for pathology results, so contacted HB nurse to ask if I could have results before then. She promised to speak to my consultant and ring me that Friday. Never got a call. Daughter rang several times but she couldn't get hold of this nurse who was supposed to be my 'named nurse'. Also rang consultants secretary but never got the promised call back. Didn't get results until May appointment. Consultant and nurse apologetic but I think seven weeks is a long time to wait to see if the cancer had spread. They are just overwhelmed with patients with sick gallbladders. The trouble is, the longer they defer surgery, the worse patients are becoming- all sorts of complications! You only have to read some of the posts on this forum.

Keep pestering Matt. It's your health at risk- not theirs.

Thats disgusting to keep somebody waiting that long and just not on, totally pathetic!

I don't understand how it all works within the NHS , all the consultants at my hospital work at the two local private hospitals also. When i look at the working hours of the gp's within my surgery which has 13000 patients two work 2 days per week, two do 4 1/2 days per week and two do 4 days one week 5 days the following.

I'm at the end of my tether with it all and nobody seems to care. I've hardly ever gone to the doctors and when i think some people go to the doctor every week, week in week out for every fart, sniffle and pimple on their skin, i expect to be treated with repect and not to be treated like i'm making it all up. Unfortunately i have anxiety on my records and it's the easy option for medical professionals to blame that!
