Feeling so tired and washed out.

My problems started after taking antibiotics for a chest infection. The antibiotics gave me an extreme case of diaohrea that lasted for two days. This i believe gave me piles. After using various haemorrhoid cream without success i visited my gp who confirmed the piles and gave me some alternative cream. This had little effect either. Went back to the gp's and finally after suffering for 4 months he gave me an examination. He said i had remains of internal and external piles plus a small skin tag. He prescribed some cream that contained anasthetic.I was back after a few days with a real sore backside. He said i had developed an external infection and gave me some cream that treats thrush. The infection cleared but i realised that all that the haemorrhoid cream was doing was masking the pain and the problem was still there. Finally i went to see a specialist through private healthcare. He got to the root cause within minutes. He told me that there is 3 things going on. Firstly the piles (of which i have no concern at the moment), secondly he said that i have an anal fissure that is causing all the pain and an anal fistula which is causing the repeated soreness and rashes. He said that the fistula is in such a position that effectively my anus is now keyhole shaped. He prescribed rectalgesic for the fissure and told me to throw it away if i felt no difference after 3 weeks and would therefore need an operation. About the fistula, he told me to stop wiping my backside and wash down with a shower head instead then dry off with a hair dryer. After finishing laughing, i told him ive got no problem applying the rectalgesic but the rest is neither feasable or practical. He told me that the external skin around that area is basically worn out and will get worse everytime i wipe. In the real world i gently wipe with good quality paper and then finish off with baby wipes. He told me to never put any cream of any sort on that area again. Its not him with the problem though and the soreness and itching is sometimes unbearable. I had a chat with the local chemist and he told me to use sudocrem of which actually works wonders. I am just over 3 weeks into the treatment and overall i can say there are improvements. When i am at home and taking it easy i feel so much better with just the odd itch or tickle. All the stabbing and 'being ripped open by a stanley knife' type of pains are mostly gone. The real problem is work. I do 12 hour shifts and it is like 12 hours of torture. I guess its the fistula problem that is being irritated with all of the walking and therefore sweating. My backside becomes as sore as hell and i can almost hear people saying 'why is he walking like he's sxxt himself'. The other problem is the side effects of the rectalgesic. It doesnt give me headaches but i do feel real tired and worn out. On the first week of taking it i actually blacked out in the bathroom and woke up full of bruises across my back where i had fallen into the shower basin. Ive not blacked out since but wonder if it may be a combination of side effects plus me having an underactive thyroid and therefore take levothyroxine tablets. I seem to have no energy or motivation to do anything because its all too much hard work.I have had a little time off work but am woried about having more because work treats illness like a sin and have little or no sympathy for you. If you are off sick, then your not at work and must be disiplined. If i'm off for more than 2 days then they stop the sick pay so how would i live? Can't even mention the company name because they sacked the last person who did that.

God, the more experiences I read on here the more I wonder why these afflictions aren't highlighted more. I've been misdiagnosed so many times over the past eight years it's untrue. I'm currently waiting to find out why I'm in debilitating daily pain after a botox and fissurectomy op. I had to leave my part time job and can't get on with the small business I've been working on, as standing up either has me in crippling pain after 10-20 minutes, or I really suffer the next day. I'm on between 4-8 sachets of movicol a day as even a movement the firmness of toothpaste kills me, and half the time I have to get in a scalding hot bath after a poo. I'm on loads of morphine a day, too, and the pain gets through that. . I'd recommend looking at colorectal teams online, even out of your area, and asking your gp to refer you as urgent to the best one you can find. Especially look for those that list research they've taken part in, as I feel that this shows that they're more than just wham bam surgeons. I have an appointment at University College Hospital London next month and I'm hoping that they can help me sort out the problems I've had since going to Medway Maritime, which is one of the worst hospitals in Britiain. All the best mate.

Thanks for your reply Jamie. You sound as though you've got more problems than myself. Hope you get sorted soon. I just don't know what I'm expected to do with my fistula because of where it is. Can anything be done I wonder.

      All the best mate.

Hi, I am sorry for your agony. I too got my fissure from a 2 week round of diarrhea. It has been months for me snd 3 different types of creams. I was in qgony and wanted to die. My extrene pain has been reduced to moderate discomfort after bowel movements. Knock on wood, I haven't gotten a fistila from the fissure. What I dont understand is why the doctors aren't recommending surgery. I was very close tp surgery for just the fissure but I am starting to see some improvement. Sounds like that ia what you need. Let me know how you progress.

Glad to hear that your pain has lessened. I'm quite sure that my fissure is on the mend. At the moment I'm suffering quite bad with the fistula. The specialist offered surgery for the fissure but nothing for the fistula except silly advice about re-learning how to wipe my backside and keep it clean. Can't plan much at the moment because going on holiday in 2 weeks. Hopefully may be able to enjoy it. Will keep you informed.

      Many thanks

Hi, thanks and I glad yours is too. Just curious, how did you end up getting the fistula anyway. I thought that usually comes from surgery. I am surprised that the doctor wont operate. Isn't it very painful? Also, hoe ling have you had the fissure? Its been so many months for me.

Apparently the fistula developed from an infection I had down there about 3 months ago. Can only guess I've had the fissure for at least 4 months because in the beginning was being treated for piles. The main problem for me with the fistula is that it acts like an uncontrollable drain and causes endless rashes and sores on my backside.

Wow, that sounds horrible. I wonder how you got the infection..were you using medication .when you got the infection?

Yes I was using haemerroid cream on advise of the gp then developed a really bad infection. Maybe it was from the fissure which was there at the time but did not realise. The cream had anaesthetic properties so I thought things were going fine but it was just masking the pain. When I stopped using it I was in agony.
