Feeling terrible

Hi

I'm at a lost end as to why I feel so bad. I have a lot going on as I have posted in other forums - peeing blood only when I have my period and am undergoing tests for this. I have a prolactinoma which I take cabergoline for but the past few months I have been severely constipated, I have pain under my right rib when it's bad. The doc gave me laxido which helps but when I stop it I go back to constipated. Apparently I have a hiatus hernia and I also for the past few months have been taking omeprozole as my stomach acid has been really bad. On Saturday just gone I was so constipated I sat on the loo for nearly an hour trying to pass the poo out but when I felt down there it was like my whole back end was the size of an orange. I eventually had to manually extract the poo out as it was going nowhere. Went back on the laxido and today I have had 3 massive poos. On top of all this I keep getting chest pains pains under both armpits pain in my neck and head, like pulling pain and my hands keep going really cold. My hair is falling out loads and I really think I'm not very well at all. I'm REALLY fatigued and have huge bags under my eyes. I'm back at docs this afternoon but I'm sure he thinks I'm a hypochondriac. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm thinking that all your problems are maybe side effects of the drugs you are taking.   Why do you stop using the Laxido?  has your doctor told you to stop?

I stopped taking laxido as it's not something I really want to take just so I can poo. I stopped to see if I could go without it but obviously can't. Doc gave me more laxido today so just got to have it and put up with pain in my ribs right now.

    Hi,

Is the doctor who gave you laxido the same one who put you on omeprazole?

Is it the same one who diagnosed you with hiatus hernia? How was the diagnosis arrived at? Have you had gastroscopy?

You will likely remain constipated while on omeprazole. And the more constipated, the more acid reflux you can expect too. It is a vicious cycle.

Your hair is falling out and you are unwell most probably because when drugs are used to suppress stomach acid, absorption of nutrients is also reduced.

Can you discuss with your doctor if it will be safe to wean yourself off the PPI and adjust your diet to assist with better digestion, assimilation and finally bowel movements naturally if he/she feels this will be safe for you.

    Hop eyou feel better soon.

I've had a hiatus hernia for years, it was found when I had a gallstone removed from my pancreatic duct 10 years ago. It hasn't bothered me too much until I got stressed in January when I started peeing blood then my stomach just seemed to go haywire. Loads of pain from acid, I could feel the pain behind my rib cage, like a stinging sensation. I've also got this niggiling pain under the bottom of my right rib which is worse when I'm constipated. Doc just sends me off with laxido and omeprezole and has started cutting me short when I'm explaining how I feel because he thinks it's all anxiety. I will see a different doctor next time as I'm not happy with this one.

Unfortunately it is a bit of a vicious cycle. Your acid will be bad if you are constipated. You will be constipated whenever you do not take laxido as it makes bowels lazy. The less acid you have (PPIs that you were prescribed) the more constipated you will be. And, though this is still a bit controversial, the less acid the more likely you are to have reflux because the oesophagal sphincter will get loose. I would discuss with a doctor regarding slowly phasing out PPIs.

To reduce acid splurting out avoid overeating and foods that bother you. Could be tomatoes, peppers, chocolate, citrus...whatever bothers you exclude it or eat those only until midday.

I would take some fermented food like sauerkraut, eat a lot of prunes, and/or prune juice or stewed prune, bran and whatever else helps soften stool and try to get my bowels to work on their own. It may take a few weeks. It is important to take enough liquids and avoid food that can cause constipation like rice, pumpkin, dry foods etc. Focus on fruit and vegetables, broths and some fats (full fat yoghurt, chicken with skin on, avocados etc.).

I believe you can regulate your bowels this way within 2-3 months and help control your acid problem.

For the underlying medical conditions I would continue exploring with your doctors. And yes, a second opinion would be great if your doctor is losing sight of you as a whole. While your stomach is likely worse because of anxiety, it is the condition that is causing your anxiety. You need to be given tools to feel more in tune and in control of your body and anxiety will lessen. The current approach, though common and medically sound, may actually just be prolonging your problem. This is something you will need to discuss with a few practitioners until you decide on the best and safest middle ground. smile

If your anxiety is spiralling, try some mindfulness meditation, perhaps ask for CBT to help with this situational anxiety in the short-term.

      All the best!

      All the best.
