I’ve been having this ‘strange feeling’ for about a month and a half now, it started where I woke in the the middle of the night panicking in complete fear and everything around me seemed totally surreal I couldn’t make out how anything was there , or how anything could possible function, it’s just a strange feeling and so scary. It’s then been happening randomly to me so I’ve been doing a lot of research about ‘feeling strange’ and dissociation. First of all the feeling is totally normal, You need to be feeling anxiety about something for the feeling to occur, because dissociation happens when the brain almost shuts itself off from the stress and fear so you can cope therefore making things seem ‘surreal’ so what I found helpful where a few things. 1) telling myself ‘this feeling is not going to harm me , it is scary but it cannot last forever’ 2) when the feeling occurred I try my hardest to focus on the thoughts passing through my mind and pinpoint what is actually causing me to feel anxious (I’ve also read that mindfullness is not advised for people with social anxiety) 4) I carry a journal with me because I have those random horrible thoughts that try and spike my anxiety so what I do is get my thought journal out and write them down , sometimes they are so random things like ‘I feel strange, things don’t feel real, what even is the universe, how are we here’ lol but writing them down maes me feel like they’ve almost past out my head and I don’t need to think about them anymore. 5) when I’m extra anxious I use rescue remedy and sniff lavender oil it soothes me and makes me feel calmer 6) I read that people with anxiety tend to hyperventilate without realising which can cause someone without anxiety to even experience surrealism so I’ve started focusing on slowing down my breathing. 7) mindfulness really does help the headspace app is really good 8) remember to be strong it’s really hard when anxiety strikes it’s an evil thing and pops up even when your not expecting it, but try to remember we only live one life and I try to think in 5 years I don’t want to look back on memories and have none because I was Constantly battling problems I made up in my head xx I hope things work out for you all ??

Hi Shaunie. I am very interested in your post. I have been having the same problems for about 3 years now off and on. Basically feel pretty dreadful every day, particularly worse in the mornings and better in the evenings. Does anyone else suffer more in the mornings? My symptoms besides others include feeling very shaky (mostly internally), being tired all the time, fuzzy head, butterflies in the stomach, lack of appetite and general worry.
I also thought I had some mystery illness and have had numerous tests at the Dr's but always the results come back A1. Reading all the posts and replies it would seem apparent that the common theme amongst us all is anxiety to some degree or other. I have had it for more than 20 years but it was always quite managable and wasn't constant until 3 years ago. I am particularly interested in comparing symptoms with some other sufferers of this condition in order that we might see if there are any common issues, triggers or helpful tips. Are there any others out there who are interested in discussing further? Gary
Ps. I'm 47, male and live in the UK.
