Hello,

I am 30 years old.

I am having thyroid last 12 year and have anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, panick attacks, and many things from last year. Finally i have decided to take depression medication(escitalopram), I am having this medicine past 5 days and feeling some weird things like feeling more depressed anxiety less sleep shaking numbness headache chest pain left arm pain i am feeling something happing in my brain, dizziness and feel like something happin with me i am so scared. Regarding my left hand and arm pain i have done few tests in past couple of months like stress test,24hrs Holter monitor and 4 time KEG.

I want to know about above problems and want to know about (escitalopram) medicine is it gonna help me or not? I am taking 5mg.

Anyone experienced or any specialist can help me regarding this matter.

Sorry to say the med has decided effects! 5 days isn't really enough time to tell if it is going to work! However I would contact your doctor and infirm him of your issues! I know I have been on this med for 12 days and have experienced jitteriness and hand shaking and yes a bit more anxiety! I have been told it takes a least 2 weeks to feel any improvement and then 4 to 6 weeks for the full improvements!

Hi Smsih. I totally agree with wilb's comment. I have been on escitalopram for over 4yrs now & it keeps me as the real me. keeps my depression/anxiety largely under control. i am on 15mg. i agree you should talk to your doc about your side effects of tight chest & left arm pain, but all the other symptoms you are experiencing are normal transitional side effects when you start this drug or go up a notch with dosage. they usually start to subside within 2-4wks. from personal experience, i would give it 4-6wks on your 5mg. if you don't get enough relief from that dose - by feeling more like the real you, go back to your doc to talk about going upto 10mg. then repeat that process of trying it for 4-6wks. if you get any bad/sinister thoughts & feel dramatically worse - you must go back to your doctor urgently, although this is very unlikely. try not to "what if, what if" if you can & just take the current week at a time. take care, & let us know how you get on. xx

      Hye looloo43,

Thanks for your awesome reply, I'm gonna wait for couple weeks hope this medicine kicks me.

Have you ever experienced any side effects in the start days??

Yes, just the same as you apart from the tight chest & left arm pain. its common. it means your body is adjusting & the meds are getting into your system. i also experienced small pupils for a couple of weeks. Sue on the escitalopram forum has been going through the transitional side effects too & is gradually increasing her dose. she has now been put on a very small dose of lorazapem (a tranquilizer that i have also used in the past for sleep problems & anxiety) to help her with the transition until the escitalopram settles down, as she was finding she had regular morning anxiety. xx

      Ohh really make seance,

I wanna know that these side effects are temporary or its gonna keep always with me?

    • Posted

No, should be temporary for 2-4wks while your body gets used to it. if you go up in dose after this, you'll probably experience the same for few weeks, but milder. take care.x

Hi smsih. it's common to feel worse when you start ad's or increase dose. this should only last 2 - 4 wks. if you have any terrible thoughts or feelings though you must go to see your doc urgently, although this is very unlikely to happen. stick with it if you can. it gets better for the vast majority of people on them. if you dont feel enough relief from your current dose in 4-6wks (you will know as you will begin to feel more like yourself again) go back to your doc to talk about increasing the dose to the next notch. i take 15mg day in the morning (best time to take it) with milk or brekkie, & that dose works great for me, but everyone's different, some people need less, some more. take care. xxxx
