Feeling worse

I've been depressed a long time but I've never bothered to do anything about it. I went to the doctor about a month ago and she diagnosed me with depression and put me on Citalopram. That didn't work out and so now I've been taking sertraline for 5 days and I feel absolutely awful. I feel so suicidal it is all I can think about. I constantly feel nervous and I don't want to leave the house. I have been signed off sick from work for 3 weeks. I barely recognise myself anymore I'm always shaking and sweaty and always feel like I'm not in control. I feel like im drowning

    Hi Danielle.

Sorry your having a bad time i also had a bad time on cilotapram.

Your symptoms are side effects and will pass the best thing you can do is venture into your garden or close to your house to see the light as when your cooped up indoors it makes it worse, i know its hard but little pushes at a time.

As for making you feel rough with side effects im still going through them i felt great the first week but second week is not so good. I hit 14 days tomorrow and starting to see little 5 minutes here and there of a better future. Less negative thoughts and less stress but still shaking and just started my second day of bad headaches plus my stomach is awfull but without the negative thoughts that it might be something bad i can live with it. Ive lost half a stone too but seeing promising hours or minutes which is a start.

Unfortunately we have to go through this to get out the other side. Make sure you have no caffine, coffee tea chocolate ect just eat bland foods and no sweets or sugar as that kicks off more shaking and you will panic more. I would say try a beta blocker to calm your nerves but they are not tollerated while suffering depression. You will get there i promise i know its hard but it will get better for us all. Come back in a few days let us know how your getting on. Take care love

    Hi Danielle,

All I can say is that if you feel so bad and suicidal, then you MUST go back to your doctor asap and tell them what your thoughts are. I have to say that all of these thoughts are the negative effects of the Sertraline, as is the shaking and sweating. Dont be fobbed off by them - make a point of what you are saying and get them to either listen or refer you to someone who can help. PLEASE do not think that you are alone in this - others along with myself have gone through the same thing and its awful to be in your situation, but make sure that your doctor listens - they need to know what you are going through. I too have bad depression but it helps to know that there are natural things out there which can help you, all you need to do is research best method for you and take it from there, but you MUST see your doctor and tell them about the suicidal thoughts. Please take care and you can always drop me a line if you feel the need to write to someone. Remember you are not alone in this.

    Hiya danielle,

I am really sorry you are having a rough time unfortunately we have to take a couple of steps back before we can leap forward this is all part and parcel of anti-depressants am afraid :-(.

Like marie said pls see your gp u are not alone and do not need to suffer it may help if u can get some counselling or a referral to a cpn, it has really helped me with anxiety I was on the verge of agoraphobia and managed to get help before it took over.

Avoid alcohol as this will give u the high and bring u crashing down especially on sertraline i've heard!!

I tried sertraline for 5 wks and really couldn't get used to it gave me horredous headaches and nausea. Am on citalopram now just hoping this will help me feel normal again.

Pls don't fight it on your own and get the help u really need look after yourself hun x

      Hi Louise,

In your reply to Danielle, you've helped me. As what you'd heard about Sertraline with alcohol is true. I've been on Sertraline 2mths. I manged to go out because I was feeling better. The crash today has been awful not able to get out of bed.

So back on the tightrope again. Learning to live with Sertraline.

                  Thank you Claire.

Hi,  definitely go back to your doctor.  Zoloft doesn"t seem to be effective for you.  There are many more alternatives out there and your MD should help you change meds until you come across one or a combination of meds that are effective for you.
