Feeling worse following increase #sertraline

Posted , 6 users are following.

I'd been on 50mgs for about 4 months with initial positive effects...recently the gloom had returned so I booked in with my gp, who has increased my meds to 100mgs. Now I know these things to happen over night, and I wasn't expecting to feel better after one pill but I also wasn't expecting to feel worse...and I feel a lot worse. My relationships are now being affected by how I am, my wife does not understand why I'm like this and it's causing massive problems ... I really don't know what to do sad

Sorry to hear about your issues. Yes, I believe the recent increase might be why you are experiencing heightened anxiety. It will settle down soon as your body adjusts to the higher dose.

People who have not experienced this sometimes have a difficult time understanding. My advise would be to talk it out with your loved ones and be open about what you are going through.

    Hang in there!

When I increased from 25mg to 50mg all the initial side effects returned, in particular the increased anxiety.  From what I have read this is a common occurance when upping your dosage.  Various members of this community have had their doctors prescribe additional meds to bridge this difficult period.  My GP suggested Ativan though I am going to talk to her about Pregabalin which several others have had success with.  Perhaps your doctor has a suggestion.

    Stay strong.

Thank you for your comments, means a lot that people have taken time to read and respond. I'm due an appointment in 2 weeks, guess that's to see if things settle. I know I need to talk to more people about how I'm feeling, I find it difficult to put into words just how I feel.

What exactly are your symptoms or how are you acting? Anxiety can come out different ways. Mine comes out as anger or irritable or lashing out. I hate it! Are you more depressed acting? Like not wanting to do anything, just wanting to lie in bed? Like someone j u st unplugged you? Iv tried 4 different antidepressants. One of them was Sertraline. I have to say at beginning my anxiety was pretty bad but in about 4-5 wks It was like a light switch was turned on in my brain. But physically it made me very sick. Ended up takjng it 2 an half months an stopping. How long have you been on the new increase? Its like starting over. Prob in 3-4-5 wks hopefully you will begin to feel better. I also have Klonapin to deal with my anxiety. I occasionally take it. Not everyday. Currently Im not on anything. Letting Prozac get out of system. It was horrible starting it! Worse than Sertraline. An it takes a couple months to get to working. Talking to someone about how you are feeling helps. Exercise to.

Just checking in a wondering how you are doing with the increased anxiety?  My GP has me sticking with the Ativan for episodes of extreme anxiety (she shot down the Pregabalin suggestion) which I have been very hesitant to use but it does help when absolutely necessary.

Hope you are managing okay, I'm just ending my 4th week @50mg and am still waiting for some consistant positive results, so i know exactly how you feel.

I was on 50mg for 10 years and my anxiety and depression came back a couple months ago.  They increased my dose to 100mg.  It was way to much for me, i tried to stick it out as long as possible but the side effects and the feeling I was getting was worse.  My doctor decreased my dose to 75mg about 4 weeks ago and I am doing better.  I would say I am half way there.  All of this takes so much time to adjust from how we are feeling.  You know your body, so do what you think is right for you.  If you feeling you can stick it out a couple more weeks try and see how you are feeling, if the feeling is worse then maybe have your doctor try 75mg.  Hope you feel better.
