So I had my surgery Jan 4th 2017, I screwed up my last post and I keep wanting to put 2016. But I had a total right hip replacement, this surgery had been something else, between the pain medication causing crazy itching, to sleeping all the time, to the constipation, to the mucsle cramps and spasms. I finally was able to go off my pain medication. I finally no longer constipated. But I'm still having mucsle cramps and spasms. I been doing physical therapy which is not easy. I feel so weak and tried and my energy is gone. My appetite is finally better since getting over the constipation. I finding it hard to sleep asset night I can't get comfortable and the cramps and spasms do not help with this. I almost miss the pain medication, at least then I was sleeping. I also have been super emotional, like I cry at everything, is this normal? Also my knee on my operated leg has been really aching is this normal? I'm trying so hard, I know it take time but how long. Also since they did the anterior approach my leg feels weird when I try to walk i hope that goes away. I also noticed I get stiff, I hope that is normal!! I hope this surgery wasn't to much for me

You had the op two weeks ago! Everything you describe here is quite normal. Some people are better, some are worse - everyone had their own experiences. But nothing here is unusual or to be worried about at this stage. If the spasms and cramps are bad then you can get a muscle relaxant from your doctor. That will stop those and make you a little more comfortable.
You have been through a major surgery, and it will take time to recover. Cut yourself a little slack and don't be so hard on yourself. You sound to be doing well, and you obviously have determination. So you will get there. At the place that your body dictates!

I Linsey, a lot of what you're saying sounds familiar. I found the nights were rubbish, so hard to get comfortable. I cut down on my meds at 2 weeks, but I didn't stop them completely until I was a month post op. Maybe consider taking something if you are feeling uncomfortable. Wishing you all the best.

It is common for knee joints to be sore, on either leg, after THR, since our other joints have to do more work to compensate for the surgical hip. Also, they have to do manipulation to get the hip dislocated during the operation, and that can involve the knee.
And it is very common to be emotional and cry at the drop of the hat after such a major surgery. Try to rest as much as possible and allow your cut, torn and stretched bone and soft tissues to heal. The first couple of weeks are the worst. This will pass!

Don't worry about crying and being emotional! That's nature's way! We've been through an absolute trauma! There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Hi Linsey,Please remember that you have had a major operation! It can take over a year if not longer to get back to normal! I had a total hip replacement, last March! But sadly being a carer for my disabled Hubby,I had little help to get me up & running.! The social services were annoyed with me for bouncing off on my Hubby S carers, but I couldn't do anything, although I had to grin & bare the pain!.At night I have a warm milky drink & have rescue remedy! I know that my other hip will need doing & my knees, but I am terrified of Hospital S! So have to struggle & I have reflexology every other week.Take a day at a time.regards Amanda

Social services really need to get their act together then. Goodness, it's ridiculous that they were annoyed with you. What did they expect?
I don't think anyone really likes hospitals, but they are better than not having any! Take care of yourself and don't try to take on too much - it must be very hard trying to care for yourself when you have someone else disabled in the house too.

It's too bad that you had to get off your pain meds. Because of the itching. It sounds like they should try giving you something that you wouldn't
Be allergic to in order to get your comfort level back so you can relax more. I hope
You get some much needed rest soon.
