Female blood in urine but no UTI scared

Hi everyone,

To make a long story short about a year ago I went to pee and the urine was rust colored. I paniced but after drinking lots of water it went back to normal. Fast forward to December of last year. It happened again and this time it was more pink. Got in the next day to my GP, did a urine culture and put me on antibiotics. I did not start the meds as I was waiting for the culture. The culture came back normal. Then 5 days ago it happened again. I got in to a urologist this time on my own doing today. Scary possibilities were discussed and I am getting a CT scan with contrast tomorrow.

I was told many years ago I had a large kidney stone that was discovered by accident along with a small kidney cyst. Back then they said to keep an eye on it and no action was taken. 27 years ago when I was pregnant with my first I had an episode where I pee'd and it was the color of red wine. Cleared up by itself. I am scared of cancer. I also have some slight bladder pressure. I don't have an infection. Anyone else in this same boat?

      Hi Sue,

No answers. I had the CT scan which came back normal. My urine cytology was atypical so I went in for a cytoscopy which came back normal there were no irregularities with my bladder. I have not had any more episodes with bleeding I am testing my urine at home and the dipstick does not show blood. I do have a kidney stone they think that could be the cause.

      Clarissa,

I'm also in a similar boat so it's good to hear your results. I have kidney stones and cysts for 4 years but saw blood about 5 weeks ago for a day and then it stopped.. The urologist did a cystocopy which was fine and said my ultrasound looked good though he didn't study it for long as he did it in office quickly. But I had an ultrasound last year that was fine showing kidney cysts and stones. I've always had occult blood in urine.. When I went in last week he seemed concerned and I'm getting a ct scan next week with and without contrast. It is scary. Did they say if your kidney stone was near the ureter or why would it result in bleeding ? I am actually taking an antibiotic and the bleeding stopped for 2 days but today I see traces again so not sure what that means at all. I do know I had a uti infection but it doesn't rule out an additional problem of course. Thank you for any reply .

Dee I had the CT scan with and without contrast it was easy and fast. When they give you the contrast agent you will feel like you just peed your pants. They will warn you about this but you don't actually pee it's the dye making it to your urinary system. A very odd sensation!

My stone is non obstructing. I was told I need it removed. I am go look into the removal next March. they break up the stone when your are put under. I guess mine is so large it will never pass on its own. Please update after your CT scan and let me know how you are doing?

Have you ever had a Urine cytology performed? I had two and they keep coming back atypical. I was told it could likely be the stone causing it but they run that test to rule out other bad things.

      Clarissa,

Thanks for your feedback. Good to know about the ct scan sensations. I have that a week from Monday. Tomorrow I will do kidney ultrasound.. What I'm most concerned about is the visible blood.. it's not a lot and today it seemed to not appear for around 8 hours but saw some traces an hour ago.. My first 2 days on antibiotic I didn't see any at all but they yesterday and today I see some (day 3 and 4). Of course, when it did look clear it still could be occult blood but it was nice to NOT see it.

That is really good your ct scan is normal. I am more nervous about the results than procedure. I've had occult blood for years and do have a few kidney stones in each kidney as well as a few cysts.. but up till only had occult blood in urine and not visible..

My cytology a few weeks ago was good. I also had one last Dec which was good. I know I do have a uti due to the odor but am concerned that on top of that there could be another issue that is serious. I have a few stones that I think are too big to pass but they aren't obstructing and no doctors suggested blasting them as I think they are stable. Were you told it needed to be blasted if it's non-obstructive? Did they say what is atypical in the analysis?

Could you post an update tomorrow and let me know how things go after you get your ultrasound done? I would love to hear back from you and will be thinking of you tomorrow.Back when I had a kidney scan done they did not see the stones only the cysts. The stones were only found through a CT scan.

I too have had microscopic blood in the urine for years. I saw my GP who just gave me an antibiotic when the gross hematuria showed up. But looking back on my records urine tests from 2014 showed blood in the urine. Years ago when I was pregnant (26 yrs ago) I passed extreme gross blood in the urine deep dark like red wine. Never happened quite that bad but I have passed rust urine and pink urine which let me to the doctor this year. I think it's great they are doing all these tests on you. My stone is non obstructive but I was told it just can't sit there it's got to come out. I guess they can cause damage maybe? I don't know. Maybe you have a small stone lodged in the bladder and that is causing the bleeding? Maybe something is stuck? That is good your urine cytology was normal. Mine had two atypicals and I was told not to worry it might be the stone causing it but I am concerned. I follow up with my doctor hopefully soon. Please let me know how things to toorrow.

      Clarissa,

Thanks for wanting an update. The Ultrasound on kidneys went ok except they said to have 2 glasses of water an hour before and I was ready to burst.. not sure if it's due to being at end of the uti or what.. but I said I had to empty bladder out! Anyway, they let me do that and she seemed to spend a lot of time on the left kidney.. My bladder again was really full before she even wanted to do a little bladder scan and I told her I had to run to bathroom again!

When I came back and she did scan even after my emptying bladder she said it seemed very full! So not sure what that means though I had a ton of water even before the 2 glasses. I had no blood at all yesterday which was good or today. I wasn't told in past that stones had to come out.. I have had a few stones since 2010 even and the urologists I've seen over years never said anything had to be removed. I had a cystoscopy a few weeks ago and the urologist said there were no stones. Also, my stones always show up on ultrasounds so I wonder if yours is small if it didn't show up till a ct scan.. in which case I would think there's even less need to remove it! Can you get a copy of your lab work to see what atypical means? You could then google each item. Of course, this can cause more anxiety too! I am seeing primary tomorrow and they said he can probably get the ultrasound results faxed by then even though i just had it done yesterday. That would be good.. next week is ct scan.. BTW this might sound flaky but I had read that oregano oil is very good against bacteria, viruses and fungi and I had gotten some and took capsules yesterday and am curious if this can keep things clear once antibiotic ends tomorrow.. I wasn't sure if I saw a tiny trace last night of blood but it was hard to tell and today looks clear. I hopefully will get some more perspective after seeing primary tomorrow.. I am going to change urologist as I just didn't like waiting over an hour for appointment which was 5 minutes long!

I am so glad you got that done thank you for updating me. I was thinking about you yesterday and how things had gone. Can you let me know what your primary says about the scan when you see them tomorrow?

I forgot to ask but did they do a urine culture on you to check for bacteria? What antibiotic are you on if you don't mind my asking? If you have a true infection, then DManose is a great supplement to take to help keep the bladder clean. Lots of folks with UTI use it and it works great. Maybe look into using this if your infections continue? I know lots of urololgists seem to think it's ok to take however of course they want to promote RX meds first. I prefer to take the natural route if I can.

Maybe they were focusing on that kidney to make sure the cysts did not rupture or looking closer at a stone? I will be interested to hear what they say.I bet your urinating blood because of the stone. I have had mine sitting in my kidney for at least 13 years if not longer. I think it is so large that it needs out is what they are telling me. I will do the procedure as I would hate to have it break loose and it will not pass on it's own.

You asked about the urine cytology and the atypical result. I looked it up and it scared me but my doctors were not overly concerned at this point. When I saw a specialist who also knows cancer he said unless it came back suspicious to worry. I think they may feel the stone is causing it but I follow up with my local doc next March. That is the soonest he has.Keep me posted ok? Don't get too worried you likely don't have anything serious but he is probably doing the CT scan because anytime they see blood they need to thoroughly investigate it.
