Femoral hernia

After having inguinal hernia repair with mesh and chronic pain from it I had the mesh removed and triple neurectomy. I have now been diagnosed with a femoral hernia after I noticed a new buldge. I was examined and the femoral hernia was found using ultrasound.
That is all I need after bowel resection due to a twisted bowel and three inguinal hernia surgeries.
Anyone familiar with femoral hernia? I would appreciate some feed back.

Hi Adele,
Sorry I can't help with your Q. I just wondered, did the triple neurectomy help you in the end? I've just had a mesh in, and oh my god the pain is just something else (especially ejaculatory!)
Wish i'd never had the bloody surgery!
Matt

I survived a life threatening twisted bowel and the laparotomy and bowel resection that was a walk in the park compared to this (hernia repair), now x 3 surgeries . The triple neurectomy has helped a little, but it has taken months and is very slow and day by day.
I think all the surgeries and mesh removal have contributed to the femoral hernias. Not sure what I am going to do. I do not think I am a good candidate for femorial hernia repair due to all my prior surgeries. I am pretty slim also, so not much flesh left to work with
Your mesh could have interferred with nerves and your spermatic cord. Get a second opinion.

Gosh, I'm sorry you've had such a tough time. Any chance you could be referred to a specialist hernia centre? It sounds as though your current general surgeon isn't up to scratch.
It's only 4 days post-op so I will wait the month out, and see where I am then.
I honestly can't imagine living with this pain for months or years on end; honestly, I feel for you. I really wish you the best and hope you recover

My doctor who did my 2nd and 3rd operations to remove the mesh and completion of triple neurectomy is a specialist in groin surgeries. He has 25 years experience just in this field and is a Specialist Surgeon best known for his work in chronic groin pain and surgery for groin disruption in elite athletes.
My illioinguinal nerve was intentionally severed during my first op to place the mesh. That was the start of my nightmare. My first hernia repair with mesh was done only 6 weeks after my twisted bowel surgery.
My illioinguinal nerve was trapped in the mesh.
Even though this second op to remove the mesh seemed to be a success at first, I was still in torturing pain 3 months post op, hence my 3rd groin surgery, the last resort was triple neurectomy.
I was just starting to feel better, new physio routine and I discovered the new lump, which was only two weeks ago, which has turned out to be femoral hernia and it seems I have one on the left side too which has had no surgeries, ever. The right side is the one which is bulging and is semi reducible and looks quite small. My husband has to look hard to see it, but from my perspective, looking down and to touch it is quite obvious and shows up clearly on ultrasound.
The risk of developing a 'recurrent' femoral hernia after previous inguinal herniorrhaphy is 15 times higher than the rate of femoral hernia repair in the general population. There is a higher chance of bowel obstructing your intestines with femoral hernias than inguinal hernias and strangulation is a medical emergency.
Anyway enough of me and I wish you a speedy recovery. Please let me know how you go.

I am seeing my surgeon next week. He has not seen the scan yet only the report. A lot of people do not want to confirm the diagnosis. I believe femoral hernia quite rare compared to other hernias.
I have got a definite bulge and the radiologist pointed the hernia out on the monitor. While probing it it partially reduces, but returns when let go.
I am trying not to worry because I have been through enough. Will see what the doctor has to say.

I am hoping this one is less complicated with the recovery. I was very active also. I would say if all goes to plan 4-6 weeks initially to let your body heal, obviously no heavy lifting during this time.
You should be able to gradually get back to your routine.

Hope all went well.

I also had to have left and right inguinal lymph nodes removed because they were hardened and blocking my femoral canals. This has caused swelling in my right thigh.
If have never had groin surgery before and no mesh plug is used I believe you will have no problems with this surgery. Just no straining or heavy lifting etc for several weeks after your op, so you will have to modify your exercise regime initially.
Best of luck.
