Femoral nerve damaged from hip replacement

Posted , 19 users are following.

The reports say that femoral nerve damage is rare in hip replacement ......afer reading about sooooo many of you that have the same problems like I wonder where that comes from! I had mine done 10 years ago and it never came back just got worse. Right now it hurts to take a step ....still cant lift the leg....still go up the stairs one at a time....still feel especially around the knee numbness and do not function like a normal  human being! The only thing I got from the surgeon was a handicape sticker!  Needless to say I am soooooo angry that this happened when many say it should not have as the surgeon knows where the femoral nerve is!!!! Oh and my leg is harder and bigger then the other one!

I am sooo sorry you are suffering from this! I have lumbar foraminal stenosis ( along w a bunch of other stuff that I just wrote in someone else reply) NOT as a result of surgery but before and still. My surgeon says we only replaced 1 part-we have a long way to go if i want to. Im have to just be happy that I dont have the grinding pain in hip area where the joint turned square and was hanging out of socket! haha so its a little better. Please, dont hold onto the anger,it will get you barbara. Is there any resurgery or additional surgery they can do? or accuncture or sonic therapy that can help? Many blessings and may we all find peace and joy along the way!

Like me, you have suffered a rare complication.

Nerve damage is listed in risk lists, mine (ceramic socket inserted at incorrect angle) I have never seen yet.

We accept risk as part of life, and I'm afraid we are just the unlucky ones left with post-surgery problems.

I am very thankful that I am not in pain, as you are, but my new joint could give way at any moment.  If it does, I'll be back in hospital once again, taking all those surgery risks once again, to have yet another hip operation. Even if it does not break, if I need a replacement when it wears out, I have more problems, as they could not remove my acetabular insert last time.

It is awful when it happens to you, but that's life.  Sometimes it does go wrong.

Is there nothing that can be done to repair your nerve damage?

    Best wishes

Dr. injured the femoral nerve and still numb after ten years from thigh down especially in the knee area.....hurts more at times then other times......so hard to explain but I have to be careful with the knee in case it gives out....have to take the stairs one at a time.

Barbara I forgot to say it's been 13 yrs for me and still I cannot lift leg it feels like elephants sat on my thigh/knee. The actual so called I might be lucky to start enjoying my nerve growing again!!! Yea I think it is somewhere in a lab but no I cannot re-itterate enough , I knew nothing of this was never told it's not even mentioned on consent form .... I thought surgeons were up there with the likes of priests etc of a bygone era.... I learned hard way and took my surgeons word for it...i wish it was just full replacement now but bk in 06 it was a newish thing for people who were young n needed new hip. And yet wen i had second hip done a full ceramic replacement, it has haunted me to this day with constant crunching clicking locking etc feel like a mime artist half the time , stopping starting moaning groaning

      Hi Ann,

Warm welcome to this forum - Usually we find this forum when we are looking for answers - I am sorry to hear about the pain you still have -

Did you have THR surgery because of OA and is the pain the same?

Have you ever been told why you have this?

      Thinking of you

Yes at that time I had many doctors check and nothing more could be done. Now that I read about soooooooooo many cases wonder if the surgeion should be held more accountable .....the ads all say will be out in the golf course playing again in a few weeks etc...........ha

Not that it helps you at all, but in the mountain of documentation I had before my operations, it says there is a 1 in 100 chance of some nerve damage in the operation - obviously yours is at the more serious end of the scale - not to mention nerve damage from the spinal or epidural anaesthetic procedure.  There is also about a 1 in 100,000 risk of death. sad

How the medical professionals all gloss over the possible complications before you go in for it - and it seems to be human nature that we all like to think that we are not going to suffer them, it just happens to 'someone else'.
