FemSeven 50

I'm 44yo and started menopause symptoms last autumn. The worst being the hot flushes and disrupting sleep. It was no surprise I started early menopause as have other chronic health issues and my body seems to delight in doing things it shouldn't be doing and had only had 2 periods in previous 12 months.

Anyway, after blood tests confirmed it my GP started me on evoral sequi in December 2015 which were brilliant for the hot flushes but unfortunately I had horrendous reaction to the progesterone with it giving me nuclear level PMT. it left me feeling like I wanted to rip someone's head off. Didn't understand what was happening to me for couple of months as never had PMT before but after reading up on here realised I was intolerant to the progesterone so stopped the patches at Easter.

Hot flushes returned and sleeping was nightmare. I would be so shattered I would be in bed most if the weekend asleep.

Saw my GP again this week and after looking up different HRT options she prescribed me FemSeven but she's given me wrong ones as these have no progesterone in any of them. I know I need progesterone as still have womb and this makes it shed the lining. We did discuss 3 monthly HRT so it would reduce the progesterone to only every 3rd month.

Sorry for long post but hopefully someone will be able to answer my question, which is:-

Can anyone suggest a progesterone patch (cannot take tablets as have only tiny amount of bowel and cannot absorb them) which I could them use every 10-12 weeks and what is minimum number of days I could get away with using it whilst still ensuring it causes the womb lining to shed.

Thanks.

HI there. I am also intolerant to progesterone. I have now been put on a regime whereby I take Utrogestan for 10 days (if I can bear it) every two months. This is the most natural progesterone there is. It makes me feel dreadful, but I have no choice if I want to remain on the oestrogen which I desperately need. I am also peri-menopausal and haven't hit the menopause yet.  Two Gynaecologists persuaded me to have a Mirena coil fitted which was disastrous for me - it was very uncomfortable and set off urine infections both times. They will probably suggest that for you as it releases progesterone constantly at very low levels. The utrogestan tablets can be used as pessaries which is what I do. Still dreadful symptoms but I have no choice. The only other option is Livial which mimics the hormones but is made up quite differently. I have a packet sitting here which I am terrified of starting in case I get another load of side effects.  I am struggling with ongoing neck and arm pain which makes life doubly difficult, so perhaps I am just not coping very well with the additional side effects of the progesterone. It's worth asking your GP for Utrogestan which they probably won't have heard of, but which a specialist will know about. Cycologest is almost identical - in pessary form.  There is a lovely lady who has set up a webpage about this very issue of progesterone intolerance. She has basically said all that I've said to you. It's a catch 22 situation! I really sympathis.  Best wishes, Caroline

I'll definitely mention that to my GP. she did suggest the mirena coil but I said no. I have had 8 bowel surgeries with loads of internal scar tissue and have habit of getting weird side effects and knowing my luck something would happen to the coil and I wouldn't be able to get rid of it without having an appointment to take it out. So it wouldn't be in my control. At least with patches etc I can stop them immediately if something goes wrong or I have a bad reaction to them.

Have a look at Write Health by Angie McDonald - it's her webpage. Very useful. I couldn't wait to get the coil out and hated not being in control.

      Let me know what happens.

Hi maybe the progesterone creams might help.

I am just starting to use them so I can't say anything about them. But I've been reading several books on peri and it's suggested for peri women.

I don't think you can use them instead of the tablets though. I asked the Gynaecologist this week. (I mean to offset the oestrogen)

No. I just want some progesterone that is in patch or cream form that I can use to get the womb lining to shed every other month. Had to be patch or cream/gel as cannot have tablets as cannot absorb them due to having very little bowel left.
