I hope this helps people. I have alternating IBS, and fibre makes all symptoms worse!

It all depends on your diet and the diagnosis of your IBS.
Fibre in most cases is needed to provide bulk to your stool and can be healthy for your gut.
However your GP should be approached to discuss your diet and any problems caused by your condition.
Certain factors need to be discussed, talk to your GP and a type of diet may need to be considered depending on your condition.

Even if you don't have IBS you're told to have fibre in your diet. This is a sweeping statement you've made, which had what level of truth behind it? I have both IBS and mild diverticulosis and am told BY A DIETICIAN that you must less fibre when diverticulosis flares and most of the time you have anything you like. That's professprofessional advice!

I have quoted the source of my information in the description (the World Journal of Gastroenterology).
I'm not trying to start an argument. I know that fibre has caused me a lot of problems, so I'm trying to help others who may have tried eating a high fibre diet and have wondered why they have gut issues. If your diet helps your gut issues then of course you shouldn't alter it!

There's 2 lots of fibre like there are 2 lots of IBS. The DWP are thick and felt I always had IBS where I soiled myself. I am very sick of explaining to people that I have IBS with constipation with leaves me in agony some days! My dieticians along with the hospital and my previous doctors buggered my health as I was only following direct advice! You must have somd form of fibre in your diet. Everyone must.

Hi Connie & all. Connie is right to a degree - but everyone is different. i was also told my nhs dietician that people with ibs & other bowel diseases such as colitis (which i have as well as ibs(d)) cannot break down fibre well at all & eating a high fibre diet can exacerbate symptoms. However i was recently on hol & had some time to read about fibre. i learnt that there are actually 2 types of fibre in different foods soluble & insoluble. foods with soluble fibre still give the benefits in your diet that fibre gives, but its far easier to break down. just this week I've tried a smoothie for breakfast with 1 banana & 6 strawberries, a pot of activia & a splosh of pomegranate juice. It hasnt caused me worse diarrea than usual. bananas & strawberries are 2 of the foods that are high in soluble fibre. I tell you it takes a lot of time to read about this on "the net" as you can imagine; but try reading about it & write down some of the foods high in soluble fibre & gradually try them out to see if they "suit your gut"!! some different websites conflict info, but you can find common results if you look at several & reputable sites. good luck all. x
