Fibroids @ 36 and never had kids

Hello everyone! I'm new here and I've been searching online for forums like this.

I'am married for 1 year and six months and badly wanted to conceive to no avail. My husband and I decided to consult an OB Gyn. I had different tests and a transvaginal ultrasound. When results came out there were two fibroids seen in my ultrasound. One fundal subserous myoma 3.4cm and another small posterior intamural myoma 1.2cm in size. The doctor prescribed me with soy supplement and capsules only. I am confused because base on my research soy is a worst food for fibroids. I badly wanted to have kids but my condition hinders me from it. Please help.

    Hi,

There is an idea that excess estrogen is what causes fibroid growth. I have heard that some other forms of photo estrogen (eg, flax seed) will bind with the excess estrogen in your system and help to eliminate it before it causes growth to the fibroid. I tried this, but i found it was useless.

Soy also has some of these phytoestrogens. I am not a doctor, but I do think that although the theory may be sound, I wouldn’t waste time if I were trying to get pregnant. Can you get a second opinion?

Thank you for the reply. I'm really confused as to the treatment the doctor gave me. I think she's a distributor of the said product. A second opinion sounds good. Thank you for the information it certainly helps a lot.

    Hi Cyrine,

I too am 36 and have not had children. I found out a year & half ago that I had a large 10-15cm intramural fibroid which didn't cause too many problems other than discomfort, overheating and bloating/inflammation. I had it removed a few months ago via myomecotomy in Perth, Western Australia and it was the best thing I ever did!

Before I found out about the fibroid, I had a salivary hormone test done by a Naturopath as we weren't getting pregnant and my oestrogen was off the charts (over and above the norm) and my progesterone was extremely low. I was also highly stressed which can contribute to hormone imbalance and no luck with getting pregnant.

It is my belief that stress coupled with high oestrogen and low progesterone contributed to the development of the fibroid. There is so much you can do naturally to rectify this when they're small such as stress management, diet, oestrogen reducing & progesterone increasing supplements etc... There is also a new drug out there to shrink small fibroids too if you want to go down that track but they do have side effects.

I'm not sure which country your in or why your Doctor gave you soy (very unusual) but I'd highly recommend getting your oestrogen and progesterone levels tested in the first instance. Try an experienced Naturopath/Nutritionist first as the medical system isn't always the best and not all Doctors truly understand fibroids, they still think they develop for no reason which is not true.

    Good luck smile

Thank you for the reply. I'm from Southeast Asia and yes sometimes medical practitioners weren't good at prescriptions. I dont have symptoms such as pain or unusual bleeding though Im starting to wonder why my belly is getting big. I thought because im getting fat.

I was really confused as to the soy supplement my OB gyn gave me. Can I mention the product here? Testing my estrogen and progesterone levels sounds good. I'm wondering why my doctor didnt test me for that. Thank you for your advice. It helps a lot.

    Hello Cyrine,

I recently had open myomectomy for multiple fibroids. I’m so happy that they’re finally out of my uterus. The gynaecologists’ practice and recommendations in South East Asia is likely to be quite different from the practice and recommendations  of gynaecologists’ in the West countries such as England. Unfortunately it’s hard to comment on the recommendations that your gynaecologist has made and the treatment that you have been given, however I can say for sure that it would be rather unusual over here in England. If you’re in a position to afford a consultation abroad try this option.  (I know it’s easier said than done). Sometimes you can talk to the doctors over Skype.  Also the size of your fibroids shouldn’t really make your stomach extend that much unless you’re super slim. By the way many women do get pregnant with multiple and larger fibroids and they carry their pregnancy full term. Sometimes it’s just a matter of the right time, like every thing else in life! So don’t give up hope! Try to get a second opinion in your own country and a third opinion abroad. Arranging a Skype call is easier than flying to the country. Simply google reputable obstetricians and gynaecologists in the UK or which ever country you’re interested in and make enquiries with them via email. I wish you all the best in your journey and I hope that you’ll have a little bundle of joy to celebrate this time next year if not before the end of this year!  smile

      Hi Kay

Thank you for all the informations you imparted on me. Having a child is my dream and my condition right now is stressing me so much. The treatment my doctor gave me is good for a month. If the fibroids wont shrink by that time Im going to get a second opinion. Though I'm afraid that the fibroids will grow due to my medications. I was given a Non-GMO soy supplement. Some of my friends told me that if i get pregnant my fibroids will go away. Is that true? I dont want to undergo any surgery to get rid of them as of this time. I'm afraid it will lower my chances of conceiving if something goes wrong in the surgery. Thank you very much for replying to my queries and encouraging me not to lose hope in conceiving. 😊

      Hi Cyrine,

I felt exactly the same way that you do about having surgery. I thought about it for over three years. But I’m now 34 and I don’t want to limit my chances of getting pregnant when I do try; this plus the extreme pressure on my bladder and bowel caused by the fibroids was essentially why I decided to go ahead with the surgery. Also I had multiple fibroids scattered around my uterus. Please remember that surgery is supposed to preserve fatility not hinder it! Nonetheless it should be the last resort. I’m sure that the treatment that your gynaecologist gave you has been researched for it’s efficacy hence why they’ve given it to you. It’s just not something that is used over here in England (as far as I’m aware), which is why I can’t comment on it. With regards to your fibroids shrinking when you get pregnant, I’m not a gynaecologist however from what I have been informed by gynaecologists; fibroids can often grow bigger during pregnancy due to increased hormone  levels. However if you’ve only got two small fibroids they may actually not be having a significant impact on your fertility and they may not be an issue when you do get pregnant; hence why I’ve recommended that you should get a second and perhaps third opinion. Many many women have multiple fibroids (more than two or three at a time) without even knowing and they get pregnant without any major issues; although they tend to be monitored throughout the pregnancy. However as you have been trying to conceive for some time now, it’s certainly worth checking things out. So you are doing all the correct things, however try not to stress too much about it as this won’t help in any way.  Have you considered IVF in the near future if you don’t conceive naturally by the end of this year? I know it’s not a cheap or easy option though! Good Luck with everything!!! x

      Hi Kay

My fibroids werent that much of a discomfort (as of now) that is why I'am not yet considering any surgeries, and I hope it wont come to that. I'am praying that it will shrink that's why I'm trying my best to eat healthy and find alternative ways like teas, oils and herbs. The supplement my doctor gave me is good for a month and if nothing changes as to their size I will seek for a second opinion. As of now we are not considering IVF yet, maybe in the next few years though as you've said it wasnt cheap. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can conceive naturally.
