Fibroids and questions

I have 3 Fibroids about 9cmm each. I have been dealing with this for about two years and I am over it.  Heavy bleeding (going through a heavy tampon every hour,  and still needing a pad) cramps that make me bend over in pain, not being able to live life 3 weeks out of the month. But the worst has been how bloated I am I look pregnant and get asked all the time.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if they have after a hysterectomy did the systems go away? Did the swelling go down? Is a hysterectomy worth it?

I’m only a week out of partial hysterectomy, I did have pain not swelling. Try using a abdominal binder to help arrange everything back. Stay Strong

I would definitely recommend partial hysterectomy. I was like this for near on 10 years. Had ablations, D and C. Would work for 6 months and then slowly return. I had to be cut too like c section but after 2 weeks post op I started to recover amazingly well. Best thing ever.

Of course the symptoms end as your uterus is taken out, along with those nasty fibroids. You can't have a period with no uterus. And if the pregnant look is from the fibroids then that's naturally gone too. But I don't think those can make your belly swollen enough to have people actually ask if you're pregnant! If you were pregnant then enlarged belly enough to show doesn't happen till 4-5mths. 3 9cm fibroids are only the size of a very small foetus that wouldn't even be showing yet. But I have no idea what size person you are anyway. The uterus is pretty much embedded in middle of lower pelvis so takes more than 3 fibroids to push stomach out to looking pregnant. Some woman when putting on weight, will do that abdominally more noticeably than other areas. Also don't know your age? Drs do sometimes just remove fibroids surgically along with D&C and not whole uterus. But that depends on loads. Age. Whether you've had all the children you want, etc.

    Hi Ashley,

I totally sympathise with you, and disagree with what Robyn says about fibroids not making you look pregnant.

A lot depends on where they are and your size too.

I’m petite and I had a fibroid the size of a tennis ball and I certainly did look pregnant! My fibroid was at the back of my uterus but it was pushing my uterus into my bladder and it took up 50% of my bladder causing me severe urinary issues, as I needed to wee constantly.

After months of discomnfort especially around period time as the fibroid gorges on increased levels of eostrogen, I paid to see a private consultant to discuss my options. Long story short I opted for a hysterectomy, keeping my ovaries and cervix. Due to the size of my fibroid, I had a c section cut and I healed really well.

Life has been so much better, no constant need to wee, no periods, no cramping from the fibroid and I no longer look pregnant and have been back exercising 😉

The nhs consultant wanted to put me on Esmya first which had awful side effects and is only a short term fix, if it actually works at all! Many people suffer from bad side effects and find their fibroids don’t even shrink. I wasn’t willing to try it due to the fact it’s only a short term fix.

I’m 42yrs old by the way. I could’ve opted to have surgery to remove the fibroid but once you’ve had one, I understand you’re prone to them and I didn’t want to end up in the same position again....

Hope that helps. If you need anymore info, let me know 😉

      Hi,

I have just read your message to Ashley & your symptoms sound very similar to mine with fibroid in sane position causing really heavy bleeding & constant pressure on bladder & toilet trips! have finally got a surgery date through for 30th May for abdominal hysterectomy but am also opting to keep ovaries (if they look ok) & cervix. I also refused Esyma & consultant recently sent a letter suggesting monthly Prostrap injections to control bleeding but I have decided against those too. Could I possibly ask how long ago you had surgery & if you have had any periods since as I know they are a possibility when retaining ovaries & cervix but I have heard recovery can be a little easier when you keep the cervix.

      Hi Sarah,

Sorry I’ve only just seen your message as it went into my junk!

I had my op in February 2017 and opted to keep my ovaries and cervix too. My consultant advised me to keep my ovaries due to my age but left the decision re. cervix to me. I was of the opinion that if there’s nothing wrong with it, keep it!

I’ve not had any periods since my op but still have a monthly cycle so I can tell from discharge etc where I am in my cycle plus I can feel my ovary during ovulation.

One thing I am currently struggling with the last few months is migraine a few days before when I would be due to have my period. My body temp is higher at night so I know it’s due to hormone fluctuation, probably a drop in oestrogen levels. I’m having a migraine for 2-3 days which is tough. I’m currently waiting to see the doctor about it because no over the counter painkillers touch it.

If you’re anything like I was, you’ll be glad to see the back of those pesky fibroids!

      Good luck 😉

      Hi Jess,

      Thanks for your reply.

I’m of the sane mind set that if there isn’t a problem with my ovaries & cervix then why remove them & im pleased to hear that you haven’t had any post procedure bleeding,

I will def ask to state on consent form on pre assessment visit that they try and retain both.

Sorry to hear about your migraines and I hope they manage to sort something out for you to get rid of them soon.

      Sarah
