Fibroids - what happens next?

I have had heavy blood loss for 18 months. Three weeks ago I began to lose so much I went to A & E. Every other time I d been to the doctors regarding this I'd been asked how much I was losing so this time in desperation I measured what was coming out. Every half hour I would flood through a super plus tampon onto a super pad. I caught all that came out when I took out my tampon and each time it was 70-100 mls with large clots.

Anyway, A& E simply rehydrated me and sent me home.

My doctor took blood the next day and the day after phoned me to come into surgery immediately.

My haemoglobin had dropped from 10 to 8.3. My blood pressure was 170/90, my temperature was 38.8 and my pulse was 130. She sent me straight to hospital.

I was in for two days during which time the bleeding was put under control and an ultrasound revealed a 5 x 7cm submucosal fibroid.

The consultant said he wNted to get me in in the next 7-10 days to do a hysteroscopy to take a better look at things.

That was two weeks ago and I've heard nothing. When I rang the hospital no one seemed to know anything and the consultants secretary said that there was nothing on my records to say I needed any more treatment.

Is this normal? When I was discharged I was given 21 days of Noresthisterone which runs out next week.

I feel as if I ve been diagnosed and then left to fend for myself.

Has anyone else had this? Any advice anyone?

    Heather,

This sounds exactly like the symptoms I was getting. I bled constantly for the past 18 months, experienced flooding as you have and resulted in hospital admissions like yourself.

For me, I had several fibroids....some submucosal fibroids and some intramural. My consultant did a hysteroscopy followed some months later by a Transcervical Resection of the Endometrium but they were only able to get 50% of the submucosal fibroid out. After several courses of medication which included, Norethisterone, Mefenemic Acid, Tranexamic Acid, Prostap Injections and Esmya tablets, they decided that they had exhausted all treatment possibilities and I was advised to have a hysterectomy.

Although something I would not have considered 18/24 months ago, I jumped at the chance because I was suffering so badly and I have a grown up son so the likelihood of me having more children was slim.

For me, it was the best thing I ever did and although still in my recovery period, I am feeling so much better.

I know that a hysterectomy is probably the last thing on your mind but my advice would be to see your GP and ask for an urgent referral back to hospital. They know you're not well from your test results so they should do this without question.

Good Luck and I hope you get something sorted soon.

Oh my goodness. Thank you thank you thank you for your reply! 😄 just knowing someone understands is brilliant! I think I need to do some serious pushing. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I can't tell you howuch it means smile

You are most welcome Heather, I know what it's like when you feel that you're the only one going through it and no one understands.

Unless you've been through the trauma of having fibroids then you can't understand the devastating effect it can have on someone. I was lucky that I had a very understanding partner and supportive family but it is still very difficult to cope with.

It is mentally tiring as well as physically, especially when your symptoms go on for such long periods of time. As I said, I didn't realise how ill I was until after my hysterectomy but the change in me both my mindset and from a physical point of view has astounded even me! smile

Do push your GP for an urgent referral, just tell him you've had enough and you need something to be done.

I hope that your GP listens to you and refers you, please keep me updated on how you get on and if you ever need to offload I am here. I may not reply same day but I always get an email when there is a new post.

Take care, big hugs to you x

I am awaiting a D&C and ablation for fibroids and enlarged uterus. I am on daily 10mg progesterone and the cramping keeps getting worse and shedding uterine lining. They gave me Percocet for the pain because my surgery is Friday (Now 4 days away). I am also having a low grade fever as well. Is this normal?

    Hi Essjaybee smile

Thought I'd post and let you know I rang and pestered as you advised, had an appointment today, hysteroscopy and a decision made for a partial hysterectomy, just my uterus.

So now I just have to go on the waiting list for approx three months for my op.

I'm so chuffed and so I wanted to thank you for giving me the resolve to push things along. It really does pay to ask!

Thank you again, hope you're recovering well!

    Hi Heather,

I am so glad that you have got something sorted and are now on the waiting list. Sometimes you do just have to make an absolute nuisance of yourself lol

I am recovering well thank you, still a few weeks before I can return to work but I had an incision to complete my hysterectomy not keyhole so the recovery time is a little longer for me.

Do you know if you will be having an incision or keyhole?

    Hprees,

I'm not familiar with the treatments you're receiving so I am not sure if it's normal to have a low grade fever or not but my instinct would say possibly not.

If you have any concerns at all I would book an appointment with your GP, if only for piece of mind xxx
