Fibromyalgia and diet

Hello all - ive been doing some research into our condition and while we cannot change it or make it go away, has anyone found changing their diet has made a difference?

Ive been reading that lowering levels of caffine, eating lots of fish like salmon and having green leafy foods together with wallnuts and flaxseeds does help.

Does anyone have any other suggestions that may be helpful?

Many thanks

    Hi Katharine

Yes - after diagnosis I changed my diet and cut out all processed food, refined sugars and gluten. I take several supplements. Now taken the plunge and cut out caffeine completely by reducing it starting 20% caffeine free mixed with the full caffeine then upping the caffeine free.  Other half didn't notice the lack of caffeine which surprised me - he only noticed when the refill bag said decaff!   Must say I have noticed a difference not only in my weight but my wellbeing. Everything is cooked from scratch. I have trained myself only to eat when I am hungry and by asking myself if I am actually hungry or just bored/stressed etc the weight has come off. No need to diet as I feel the word diet means temporary not permanent so just class it as a change. I have also gone down the hynotherapy route which has been a great help in coming to terms with fibro and what it means for me personally. Aso use relaxation tapes.  Pulses, nuts, fruit, veg, dairy, meat, fish all included in my diet provided fresh and cooked from scratch.  Definitely feel better for it. Good luck in finding what works for you.

Wow Maggers - that is truly amazing! All I have craved for is junk food and with the lack of exercise have piled on the weight. I'm the heaviest I've been since before having my son... My partner has never known me this size and I feel totally uncomfortable.

I really need to try this approach, as I feel I'm making matters worse with all the rubbish my body is having.

I really want to give your approach a go as I really think it would be beneficial for me - I just have such little willpower lol x

I piled on the weight too, after having to give up my horse before I was diagnosed because I could not cope.  I decided that as I could not afford to give up work I had to give my body every chance of being able to manage.  It takes about 3.5 weeks to remove refined sugars from the body. I always carry snacks (fruit or small pot of nuts) with me in case I get hungry. Drink plenty of water. I certainly have more energy but of course have good days and bad days but I am sure they would be far worse had I not changed my diet.  Good four inches off the waist in a couple of months. Just remove all temptation - clear those cupboards it is horrifying to see just how much refined sugar is in the most unlikely products. I spent the first week taking ages going around the supermarket reading labels but now it is just second nature to read the label of something I have not purchased before. I can't say I miss any of the things I have given up.  I can now leave chocolate (hubby is a bit of a chocoholic as was I)in the cupboard and it does not bother me. Never thought that would happen.  I did decide the other day to have an icecream with the girls at work as it was so hot. Big mistake I felt awful afterwards. Maybe I needed to do it to see if it made any difference - it's not something I will be repeating. All you can do is try it and see if it works for you - nothing ventured nothing gained. Good luck
