Don't have a horror story because I am waiting for a date for my operation. It is hard when you have financial obligations BUT there is nothing more important than your health so try to do some relaxation exercises, which will help your body recover quicker as the right chemicals will be flowing through your system.. I listen to relaxation tapes and they put me to sleep . It helps me deal with the stress. Good luck.

Hi Luke,I,m new to this forum,Which op are you having.I have an Hiatus hernea

    Hi Luke,

i have a hiatus hernia , also. Mine is a paraesophageal hiatus hernia. That makes it rarer and more of a concern than the sliding hiatus hernia which 95 percent of the people get. Mine is very large and I don't have heartburn. I have pain in my rib cage, lots of burping and gas, sometimes pain that feels like I am having a heart attack, trouble swallowing at times, bowel action has changed a lot. I have had two CT scans and an endoscopy that showed the hernia. I have been to see a thoracic surgeon and am waiting to get a surgery date. I've been told that if the stomach , that is in my chest turns and strangulattes that I would need an emergency surgery. I was told tha I can only have a liquid diet after my surgery for about six weeks. I have already lost 15 pounds. I am Canadian. I was very anemic and that is what started the investigation. My ferritin level was at 6. I just want it over with.

Hi Luke, Glad to hear your operation is now over and went well. I expect you will feel sore for a while which happens with any operation. I thought the op would have taken longer so good to hear it was done so quickly.

I was sent to the hospital (emergency dept)  on Monday by my Dr to have tests but not for my hernia. I had blood tests etc; and just completed 2- 24hr urine tests which I took back today. I got other things going on as well as the hernia. But my Dr also referred me to see a gastroenterologist  so don't know how long I have to wait. I have been told my hernia is mild so don't think they would operate if it is small.

I hope you will be feeling much better soon and will be able to eat what you like. Let me know how it goes.

Hi. I just had my operation. ( keyhole ) on a double hernia. Literally it was yesterday so very early stages. I don't want to scare you at all. Be aware of just how painfull it is afterwards. It's ok if I'm laying back relaxing. That's not to bad at all really. I can do that without pain relief. However. Iv always been able to push through pain and get on with things but this is something else when your trying to move around. I was told about a week before I could move around properly. I thought " yeah yeah il be on my feet before that" no I won't and have no intension of overdoing it either. My advice is to take that first week and right it off. Just concentrate on getting better. Just be aware.

Hi thanks for your reply. My op got cancelled for the 25th, had it on wed the 1st they let me out of hospt same day in to day 2 now. Pain slightly better and it doesn't hert to breath as much anymore. Bit surprised at how weak I feel I'm a big strapping 16st lad and got no energy what so ever lol just want to lay on bed an do nothing. Hopefully this will pass. How are you find eating and swallowing?? I'm just taking it easy with soup and milk on a little and often basis maybe that's why I've got no energy, all the best and wish you a speedy recovery
