Finally near date for him op

Hi everyone. Well had my pre-op for hip replacement this morning. Hope to be in by Jan or before if I get a cancellation. Everything went well except she told me I should get down to 10mg of prednisilone before op as surgeons dont like to operate above that as risk of infection is bad. I am currently down to 111/2mg and am using the plane Eileen recommends but only 1/2mg at a time. I dont think I will be down to 10mg by op date unless I just go for it. Any advice from anyone please.

Hello mouse mum, I unfortunately have no suggestions for you, but I wish you all the best.

I think by January you will be close to 10 1/2mg if not already there if you try starting at 1 day new, 4 days old if you aren't already doing so. Half a mg isn't going to make much difference. On the other hand you could try 1mg this once - the reduction is slow enough so you would notice quite soon if it was being too much. Who did you see? A nurse? Only the surgeon will make the decision and being immobile because of a major flare would make the surgery very difficult - or rather, the recovery.

If you are offered a cancellation obviously you would accept it - but it could theoretically be next week and you really can't go from 11 1/2 to 10 overnight without a risk. And equally with it being winter, with winter pressures the greater likelihood is to be put back rather than forward I'm afraid. Orthopods do hip replacements and sort out falls on ice and snow - and that messes up the planned ops too. Plus, usually no one is operated on without there being at least a high dependency bed available just in case. I've been "chatting" to a couple of "knee" ladies and one has had her op moved back a week twice now. It's that time of year.

I'd say just keep going down steadily - but maybe try 1mg with the reduction and see how you get on. Just keep an eye out for problems and be ready to rest at a stage for a week.

    Hi Mousemum,

I really sympathise. I got down to 10 by alternating 11.5/11 for 3 weeks, then 11/10.5 for a month and then 10.5/10 etc. to where I am now at 8. I think I could have done 11/10.5 for a week less.

My rheumy told me not to have cataract surgery until I was at 5 mg Prednisone, when the risk of infection is greatly reduced. Have no idea how quickly I can reduce from 8 (where I am now) to 5 mg. I have yet to get another opinion from an opthalmologist, as they have other ideas.

Good luck and please report on your reduction progress.

    Mousemum

Are you having and epidural or a general anaesthetic?

Start to boost  your immune system with  Manuka Honey, at least a teaspoonful a day, taken with a pro-biotic yoghurt.

The Honey must hhave the label UMF on it and buy the strongest strength you can afford.  They come in +5, +10, +12, +15 and +20, the cheapest being +5.

I have never heard the the term "orthopod" and it was so much like "arthropod" that it gave me a good laugh.  That and "rheumies", like "roomies", are part of the fun of this site for me. What other good nicknames do you Brits have?

I don't know about the others on the forum - but some I couldn't possibly use in public! Far too many years working in and married to the NHS I fear...
