Finally taken the plunge and commenced HRT

After entering the 7th year of perimenopausal hell, Ive made the decision to commence HRT. My painful and fatiguing hands and wrists were the last straw. Ive done heaps of research, in line with the latest advice and truths (not based on the biased studies from the WHI in 2003). I also recommend the book "How to Thrive in Menopause" by Ginni Mansberg, an Australian GP who is registered with the AMS. I am 46 but had to have a baseline mamogram & ultrasound to ensure there was nothing abnormal there that could become a problem down the track. I made sure I was prescribed body identical (not to be confused with bioidentical) eostradiol and progesterone (not synthetic progestin) in the form of a transdermal patch to (bypass the liver) and progesterone pills. Only started last night so I will keep you all posted on my progress.

Hi pethate46,
Sounds like you have gathered much information. It helps take the fear out of hormone replacement. Many docs still are living in fear over the WHI study that had many flaws starting with giving women hormones that had horse estrogen in them. I bet you will start feeling better. The first step was not allowing yourself to be given synthetic hormones. I started peri in my early 40s not having a clue what it was. Struggled along until i was 55 when periods finally ended. Little did I know then, once those stopped, symptoms really ramped up for me. I'm 60 now, been on bio identical hormones since. I do the pellet insertion 4 times a year and will be on them the rest of my life. Changed my life, I feel normal even 5 years post menopause. Hormones have many protective benefits for us too. Good luck to you.

Hi,
I'm so glad your feeling better. Do you take Bioidentical hormones which use Yam?
Kind regards,

gillian,
No its through pellets inserted under the skin in the buttocks. Consisting of estrodial and testosterone. I started with creams that were prescribed and made at a compounding pharmacy. I know you can buy lots of creams online containing yams but its the process they go through that is the key that these online creams likely ate missing. For instance, you can eat a truck load of yams and its not going to do much good for symptoms.
