Finding the Right Doc on NHS

Posted , 14 users are following.

Hi all you fine hippies....

I read that many folk say “check your surgeon out etc etc” do the research on the doctor etc etc...

My question is, are you able to check and pick etc, the surgeon even on the NHS, might be a silly question but just thought I’d ask...

Many thanks in advance for your input, this forum is so friendly and helpful...

Stay safe and happy to all....PJ

      Hi monkeypearl,

Hmm not sure how to tackle this but I bet if yoy begin a new discussion headed      Anyone in East Yorkshire with a THR   you would soon get rep;lies from people with first hand experience of your local hospitals and surgeons.

I know that surgeons are very keen to keep a good track record and are proud of their expertise so pick one who has done lots of THR operations.

I would say yes but that could mean a long long wait depending on what doctor and what hospital you choose. X

Most surgeries use choose and book, so you can decide which local hospital you go to. Go on your local hospitals website, obtain the names of the orthopaedic surgeons. Google the name, stats will appear re infection rates, revision rates and death rates. Word of mouth is useful too

      Hi maggie93798....

Quote " and death rates " lets hope it doesn't get to that yep..lol...

Many thanks for all your input and advice...

Its very hard to check them out. Face it...would they be in surgery if they were no good. They would have law suits. And ticked off the medical register. You should meet them at your pre op appointment. ....if you feel uncomfortable trequest another doctor. ....but thats probably at the risk of being put down the list again. Thats just my 2 cents worth.

If you are having physio then ask them who they would recommend, they will know who the top surgeon is in the area.

You could Google and find out which you feel has most experienced. I did check mine out and even though I went private he also did nhs too. I looked at how many replacemeets he had done and if it was his speciality some do knees and hips. maggie

    monkeypearl, hi again,

I have just found the website where you can look up all the hip surgeons and their success rates if you are in England under heading NHS England. It does not work for me as I live and have treatment under NHS in Wales

      Hi... shirley17649

Mega thanks for the info on the NHS England site, I have had a check and yep lots of info and charts on there, was trying to check in my local area but is a little much to take in. Did manage to pick up on my Orthopaedic surgery, still lots of charts etc, not fully up on what they mean to be honest....If anyone could through some light on the charts, I would be most appreciated...http://www.njrsurgeonhospitalprofile.org.uk/SurgeonProfile?gmccode=4675752

      Mega thanks PJ

I asked my doctor  for the surgeon who did my first one 15 years ago on the NHS and that was fine. I would think you could do your research and ask your gp for a particular surgeon at the referral stage. Like maggie says some trusts use choose and book.

Do you not still need your gps referral letter

    to see a consultant?

I have been out of uk system for many years.

if you are older there will be many with new hips.

word of mouth recommendation can be good.

if you are younger try an appointment with a couple

of surgeons if you are private,,and prepare your list

    of questions

but if you are with the nhs I am not sure about

    present rules.
