Finger nail splitting and hypothyroidism

Hello,  I have been hypothyroid for over 20 years.  Years ago I started to notice a problem with my left thumb which would keep splitting vertically.

Over the years it has spread to about 5 of my fingers at different times.  I have to keep nails shorter than I would like like but they still split.  Just be chance the other day I read online that vertical splitting is caused by under active thyroid.  Anyone have this same problem and have you found a solution.  Thanks.

I have been hypothyroid since my 40's & am now 77. My thumb nail has been vertically split for some years now but has recently become more bothersome. I have more recently had problems with my middle & ring fingernails on the sane hand splitting. This has become quite a problem catching on clothing, etc. I have to have my nails cut shorter & shorter. Does any body have any suggestions to help this?

Just wish I could suggest something to help the splitting. My story is very similar to yours. I have been hypothyroid since my mid 40's and am now 70. It started with vertical splitting on thumb left hand but it has now spread to both ring fingers and sometimes the middle ones the only ones not affected are the index fingers. What makes them look worse are the vertical ridges in all nails, not very pretty. I have had them for years but they got worse over the years. I have read they run in families are caused by ageing and of course hypothyroidism. Like you I have to keep them shorter than I would like. I do sometimes usual nail polish and ridge filler as well. You could try nail Strengthener but I did not find they cured it. Good luck hope you find something which helps the splitting.
