Fingernail growth!

Of all the mysterious symptoms and side effects of this strange illness, perhaps my most mysterious is the amazing growth of my fingernails when my sed rate is high. I have always had weak, troublesome nails, so I doubt that this is a coincidence - but I'm really wondering if anyone else has noticed this phenomenon???? By the way, I'd trade the good nails for freedom from pain any day!

Do you mean speed of growth? I've never had a high ESR but my nails seem to grow faster than I ever remember when I was younger. And my hairdresser commented on the amount my hair grows between appointments. Before steroids my nails were soft and broke easily, splitting off in layers too - on steroids they are in pretty good condition for someone who never does any fancy nail-care.
cheers,

I\"m sure glad that someone brought up the subject of the growth of fingernails! I'm so timid about joining in to discussions - because once I get started, I really don't know when to stop.
Yes, yes! I've been on steroids for a year, almost to the day, and I've never in all my eighty- five years, had such strong and long fingernails. My nails have always been soft and peel easily while my toenails grew normally and fast. I had read that toenails were inclined to grow slowly. Of course, I believe that my hypothyroidism had a lot to do with my nail condition - and having my hands continally in water, a lot, as I've raised 5 children and occaisonally 12 grandchildren. Thank goodness, I've not had a lot to do about the raisinf of my 16 great-grand children! ( See, how I get off the subject so soon?) Now, I'm wishing that my hair would grow back - after losing it completely so long ago!
Also wanted to answer about the tingling feet issue. I had those for long before this PMR came on, though. It does seem more prevalent this last year, however, and after I get all my housework and shopping done, I usually take off my shoes and walk around the house barefooted or in stocking feet and it seems to help a little. It doesn't prevent me from playing golf, however and as I've said before, I foget about my aches and pains when I play.
I'm still on the 6 -5 -6=5 pred routine and feel 80% normal. ( How can one judge about being normal when you've had PMR for quite awhile?) I hape to go to 5 after my next ESR test next week.
Hoping for very good days for all of us in the days ahead.

I have had the strongest and longest fingernails for the first time in my life since being on Prednisolone, so if you're imagining things Vierannie then so am I  If that is one of the 82 listed side effects then at least it's a good one! I have always been a little unsure though whether it's down to my daily yoghurt or the Pred but perhaps if I'm the only one taking the yoghurt then that will answer my question.
Unlike you Madgewildfire and Vierannie, sadly my hair doesn't grow any faster or thicker - it has always been fine and very straight and I have been shying away from my usual body perms whilst on the steroids and just using mousse and keeping it in a short bob.
Tinker - it's so good to hear from you again and that you are still keeping up with the golf - you sound like one amazing 85-year-old. Sixteen great grandchildren - wow! I know exactly what you mean about judging what normal feels like when suffering from PMR - after 4+ years with PMR now I actually am beginning to feel that that feels normal!
Lots of good days to you all.

Yes to extra strong rapid nail growth, hands and feet, fast hair growth and, this time round, no hair loss but, like Mrs.O, I eat lots of organic yoghurt and have for years, well, since my first round of PMR nearly eleven years ago so again it's sometime hard to attribute, eg ( and with everything tight crossed ) how have I managed to get from 15 to 9.5 ( 9 tomorrow DV )since 24th April? that is a terrible sentence for a teacher to have written but you get the gist!! Could it be my green-lipped mussels helping to keep the inflammation down alongside the Pred.. I'll never dare stop taking them. Healthspan does very well out of this household.
Irrelevantly but might help someone... I have just dug out the \"feather\" duster my late mum gave me. I laughed at the time but it's a great help in dusty corners.
Tinker you are a miracle and a beam ( bigger than a ray ) to us all. Wishing you lots of rounds in the sixties.
Comfort to all. BettyE
