First outbreak, severe back pain

hey everyone, it's comforting to know I'm not alone with this. I'm 53, had a breast reduction surgery 3 1/2 months ago. I had a lot of issues with infection and healing after my surgery. I kept getting colds and just generally felt lousy. Have lots of stress and God knows I could eat better! So I was diagnosed with shingles a week ago. It's on my left buttock, comes around my hip and into my groin area. I told the doctor that maybe on top of the shingles I had possibly injured mt back when I was working out. The pain is less from the sores and more in my back and hip. Feels like my hip is miss alligned Can anyone tell me if this is just the nerve pain from the shingles? How long will this last, its guit debilitating.

Hi Mary
I am so sorry for you, I know what it is like.
Mine was on my shoulder and face, which turned into bells palsy.
I am guessing your pain will be the nerves in the shingles or your sciatic, nerve , it is very debilitating and you need strong pain killers.
So sorry i cant be more helpful, I am sure you will get some more helpful posts
Did you get anti viral pills?
Take care
Christine

Hey Christine, I am on viral pills, 5 times a day for 7 days. They did prescribe narco, but a low dose and only 18 pills. I went through those quick because they didn't last very long.

Hi Mary,
Sorry for all your health issues. The pain you're experiencing seems to be very typical of shingles pain. It can be dibilitating. I don't know if you were given pain medication, but maybe pills would give you relief. But, there are a lot of ways you can help yourself to relieve pain in addition or instead of strong drugs. Try eating only healthy foods, sleeping a lot and getting rid of stress. Also, spend some time reading the threads related to shingles on this forum to give you tips on learning how to survive shingles and the after effects. It could take many weeks or months for you to feel better, sorry to tell you. I still am in pain and feel tired from shingles that I had in November!

I am so sorry you have to go through this.
You are in a good place here. This forum helped me a lot.
O was diagnosed with shingles the second time about 10 days ago. Even though the rash was not an issue for me I deal with sensations all over my back and have pain in my hip too. Shingles is a very deceiving illness. I am resting for a few days now and that so far is the only thing that helps.
I hope you get better quickly.

Hi Mary,
First, I am sorry you went through what should have been a positive experience with breast reduction surgery, then had infections, and now Herpes Zoster Shingles.
As the varicella virus infects usually the sensory part of the spinal nerve root, the neuralgia type of pain is most likely due to the Herpes Zoster Shingles. The dermatome affected would be the exact area that would cause hip pain, and perhaps sciatica.
I hope the physician gave you an antiviral and potentially analgesics to deal with the pain. (Not just Motrin or Aleve)
Are you also feeling exhausted and fatigued, with malaise? That too is part of Herpes Zoster Shingles. It would be difficult to tease out the post operative and infection factors, but these other symptoms are part of the disease spectrum. Some also develop depression and anxiety.
You didn't state when you were diagnosed with Shingles, and other conditions that might influence your recovery.

I was losing my internet connection, so I ended the post without signing off.
I am a Nurse Practitioner in the States and have had Herpes Zoster Shingles in my right ear every three to five weeks for the past twentyone years and twice in my eye.
Best Wishes
Merry Juliana
