hiya bluemoon, well done just pace yourself it will get easier as the days pass. I never had crutches went from frame to metal sticks when I was still in hospital (2 days after op) but had simular experiances when I moved over to just using one stick. Bit scary at first, like you was setting a walking distance target. Yes the butt nuscles do get a workout at the same time but you will get over this.

    regards

Arthur - (7mths post-op and walking 3+ miles daily no pain)

Hello!!!  Awesome for you!  I am 6 weeks post op THR right side from rear.  Not only did I drive to and from the shopping mall today, I walked with a cane around the store.  We were there about 1 1/2 hours.  I did have to sit down twice during trip, but, I am not in any pain.  I was just tired.  Came home and napped a while and now I am up and about again.  I am not on any meds, so I can say with a clear head, that I'm feeling good and did not over do it.  Small goals are good.  Each day up your goal!!!  You are doing fantastic and good luck on your goal tomorrow!!  GInny USA lol

hi bluemoomin...first of all ..good luck..sounds like you're on your way! I had my first hip rep. at age 65.  That was 20 years ago.  I remember I used a walker when I left the hospital and never after that..just a cane. I live in a two storey town house so therefore had stairs to contend with then (and now)but don't recall a problem.  I am due to have my other hip replaced in two months and am wondering due to my age NOW if I will find it as easy.  Know anyone my age having this done?  I live in Canada by the way.

Me again.  I noticed you mentioned you are using a crutch.  I was wondering the other day if a crutch might be more helpful than a cane which I am now using. I am in a certain amount of pain with my arthritic hip and it can only get worse before the two months I have to wait got for hip replacement are up. Some days are better than others but it makes sense to me that a crutch would afford better control. ....do  you find this so?

      Hi Molly

Im using a stick 5 weeks post THR but always used a crutch when i experienced pain before the operation. I definitely feel you have more control with a crutch than you do with a stick and can take more weight off your painful hip. Thats my personal experience tho. Speak to your doctor or physio about trying one. Good luck with the op. X

Hi bluemoomin,  well done you!  I am two weeks post op. Was only given frame day after op then straight on sticks. Was advised to walk out every day which I have done, going further each day. Feels good but yet to walk outside with only one stick, although I only use one around house. Next milestone I suppose. Like you say you have to concentrate on every step. Hope you contine to do so well. Good luck x

Hi...well done! Never give up even if it's painful for a while. Just take each day as it comes and always remember your exercises smile

Well done.  After using two crutches, just one crutch seems like freedom, you soon get used to it and no crutches is fantastic.  Just make sure you are walking evenly first and not limping.  If you do have a limp at first then go back to one crutch for a bit longer.  The more you practice the easier it gets, but don't go too far at first, you have to get back again as well.  Good luck.

Well done..but if as you say it was such a big effort and you felt light headed afterwards, which could result in you falling,I would keep with both crutches for another few weeks to gradually build up the muscles, by walking within your limits but going further distances..no point taking one step forward and two back.

Take your time it's not a race.

    Good luck.
