First Tinnitus now humming??

Hello all,

I've had Tinnitus for several years now and I've learnt to adapt to it. I believe it was self-inflicted after years of night clubs and loud music.

Recently I have started to hear a very low humming noise, but only at night. I assume this is because there is no background noise of day-to-day life to drown out the noise.

The best way I can describe it is it sounds like a diesel car is parked far away. When I first started to get it I thought it was the central heating, an oven fan or toilet fan was left on, the fringe freezer on its way out, or even the noise was coming from next door. But after thoroughly investigating none of the fore-mentioned where causing the noise.

My asked my other half if she could hear it and she can't and now I honestly think I am going insane!  Ear plugs don't stop the noise so I can only put it down to another symptom linked to Tinnitus.

I have only just managed to seem to control and stop it causing me insomnia by using breathing techniques, almost like meditating to fall asleep, but it will always wake me up, sometimes 4 or 5 times a night.

I would like to ask if anyone else has had anything similar. Or even heard of anything like this?

It would be great to hear from at least one person who has experienced this so I know I'm not going insane.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards.

    Hi Daniel,

Don't panic, I too have this low rumble all of the time along with the much more bothersome high pitched ringing in my left ear. Stick with it and you will learn to ignore it. You are NOT losing it!

    Good luck...

      Hello Frank,

Thank you for replying. Its good to be able to talk to someone about this.

Do you do anything to try and limit the stress it causes you? - as it stresses me out.

Do you take anything for it? medication or natural?

Is it a product of Tinnitus or something else?

If you have any more information or links where I could read more into it I would be very greatful if you could share that with me.

Again, thanks for confirming I'm not insane (not yet anyway!) smile

      Kind regards

You are not crazy.  At the age of 19 standing in a new jewelry store I started hearing a high pitch which drove me crazy.  It turned out I was picking up the high pitch of the new alarm being tested.  My mother tried to take my hands off my ears it was driving me that crazy.  I didn't hear noises in my head until I had a bad case of bronchitis in my 40's.  My asthma doctor said I had a blocked eustacian tube and that it should go away eventually.  Well, it never did and to this day I still have the problem.  I do have a problems with changes in air pressure and have been diagnosed with vertigo.  My most recent stroke effected the eyes and has made the vertigo worse.  So I do understand where you are with this.  Have a good primary physician, and an ENT.  If allergies are in your family, have that checked, too.  This problem usually in the inner ear.
