First Totally Sleepless night with Groin pain

Last night I took 2 paracetamols and 2 iboprofen before going to bed in the hope they would take the edge off my groin pain. I lay awake in agony the whole darned night. It didnt matter which way I lay in bed the pain was a 8/9 all night long..
I'm waiting for a thr - recently had the diagnosis of severe hip osteoarthritis - but surely this level of groin pain isn't normal to keep someone awake with it ALL night?? I needed to move in bed a little bit sometimes but the groin pain went over a 10 if I tried. I've never ever had such a painful night.
The groin pain is a bit easier now I'm sitting here at the computer but it's all round the top and side of my thigh as I'm sitting and also in my buttock.
I've never been kept awake by this level of pain and to be honest I'm scared stiff this morning. I'm trying to get an urgent doctor's appointment because of the level of pain I'm in. Can anyone tell me if they think it's "normal" to get more pain in the groin when lying down please?

Hi Sarah
You have all my sympathy. I am 10 days post op and can't believe I sleep again. I never slept more than 2 x 2 hours sleep max every night, that was a random night when I didn't need to go to work. I was virtually crying with pain and exhaustion, taking 2 x Cocodamol to get into work, get out of work and to try to sleep. Plus Naproxen last 2 weeks pre-op. I had excruciating pain in groin and thigh too.
I am immediately quicker, yes a bit sore and muscle ache after all the exercises but I came home on 2 sticks and am delighted to have had the op. I am having the other hip replaced soon but in honesty I am glad the the Cons said no to both at same time. My case may be different needing both hips replaced but I am relieved he said no to both together. I hear my second will be even better by then having one bionic new hip.
I do hope you get some relief pre-op. Maybe ask your GP for something to help your sleep? I did but only took them post-op as was concerned I might be gaga driving to work. ,
Do speak to your Doc.

annee I have actually got some sleeping tablets called Zopiclone. I'm a bit nervous to take them because I might run out ( docs only prescribe 7 at a time) & Im scared I might not be allowed anymore. But if last nights no sleep at all is going to continue I will have to take them. I'm totally exhausted today. Thank you for getting back to me though, I'm sorry you too had such bad pain but you telling me that has reassured me I'm not alone xx

Hi Sarah, so sorry you are having such a tough time with your groin pain.
I too had terrible pain like you prior to my THR. The explanation I was given was that the worn bone is trying to repair it's self but with poor quality bone. This bone would chip off and get trapped in the joint.
This explanation made sense to me as my pain seemed to move and be of different levels.
I often used to sit and cry trying to find the strength to carry on with the pain despite the strong medication I was on. (My operation was held up for some time due to other health issues.)
This is just my experience, but, it is always reassuring to see your GP. If all is ok they can at least look in to giving you some stronger pain medication.
I am post op and was amazed how quickly I was pain following the surgery. I hope you are not to far off having your hip done and are able to get your pain levels under control in the mean time.
Best wishes Chrizzy

Sorry Sarah, but I was on much stronger meds than you are on prior to my hip replacement, and still in pain. So yes, this level of pain is normal. Not for every single person. But for enough people. It isn't about the diagnosis. It is what it is and there is no predicting it. I also have severe OA in the other hip and that never hurt at all! Yet it was as bad as the one that had been replaced. Go figure!
What your are taking is a very "low" dose of painkillers. There are stronger ones available from the doctor. You need to speak to the doctor. If your are lucky then something will help stop the pain. I wasn't, and even morphine only took the edge off it. But replacement is the only option at this stage.

Thank you for that Beth, I've got a feeling I'm going to be one of those people where pain medication won't work. I was taking Naproxen but that didn't help either. I posted on here because last night was the first night I was in pain all night. No let up. But maybe my doc will prescribe trampoline or something when I see her. Here's hoping!

I was on the maximum doses of Naproxen AND Co codomol AND morphine AND gabapentin - and prior to the morphine, on the maximum dose of Tramadol. And I actually have a very high pain threshold - walked around for a month on a broken ankle and nobody can figure out how I did that! And I am back on the previous meds (i.e. without the morphine and plus the tramadol) due to now needing ankle surgery. The point is, even being good at naturally managing pain, the morphine wasn't touching the sides for me just before the op. I emphasise, for me. I had osteonecrosis. Everyone experiences pain differently. Some feel it more or less than others. It just is what it is. Pain medication, overall, "works" - but how well it works is an individual thing. Unfortunately.

so sorry Sarah ...
I agree with the previous posts that the best thing is to see your GP and get stronger pain medication ... I was on Diclofenac, high dose, didn't help but took the edge off ...
What also might help is Hypnotherapy and painmanagement - there are great videos on youtube ....
warm hug

Hi Sarah. Sorry to hear of your pain. But unfortunately yes it's normal. I had same thing for months and still do on occasion. The best thing is to ice the area as much as you can tolerate it cause it's COLD!! Also heat. That feels good 😊. Have you started physical therapy? Massaging the groin too. It's tight and the tendons, ligaments and muscles can really hurt! For me it felt like a band was tight around my upper thigh all along the goin, and buttock. I hope everything is ok and wishing you a speedy recovery!! Let us know what they tell you! Hugs, LD

Hi, try putting a pillow vertically under your leg is top to bottom, not side to side. May help to loosen the tendons etc a bit. 🛌

Hi, I also need a thr and I have been unable to sleep in a bed for months now. My "bed" in now our reclining chair, for some reason I can get a halfway decent sleep in it.

Hi Sarah, sorry to hear you such huge pain. You probably need stronger pain killer. I was on oxycodone every 4 hours. You need see York GPS and discuss your pain with her or him. Good luck hug Madlla 💗
