Just signed up so thought I would pop in to say hello (and make sure that I could handle the technology  ) Diagnosed with PMR 24 hours before leaving for Athens and a cruise. Was going to have to cancel or be wheeled to the airport in my bed as I seemed to be strapped down by my shoulders. Took suggested Prednisolone and within 6 hours was packing my suitcase. Managed the 12 days away (just) and am now waiting to speak to the Consultant later today. Seeing GP tomorrow. This blog fills me with hope and horror in equal parts! Will drop in again to let you know how I get on and hopefully get some advice from those who have been on this journey a lot longer than I have. smile

Hi Lizzie Ellen and Welcome ! You`ll be very glad you`ve joined us. I was diagnosed in July and the info and support I`ve received has been fantastic. The thing is we all seem to have different experiences of PMR but there are so many things that we all understand. It`s so good to know that if you`re just feeling sorry for yourself there`s someone on here that will sympathise and cheer you on. Shebob

    Hi Lizzie

Hope our visit to the Consultant was productive.

Lots of information on this website, run by a new Charity called PMR-GCA UK - the North East Region Sipport Groups website. www.pmr-gca-northeast.org.uk

Also loads of assistance and help with the odd questions you don't like to ask anywhere else.

    We need each other.

Good Luck in your learning curve.

Hello Lizzie Ellen and welcome to the 'Club'. I trust that your imminent appointments will prove helpful and reassuring. I do hope that we on this site will be able to give you more feelings of \"hope\" than \"horror\" and don't forget that you may well be a text-book case and recover very quickly. Very best wishes.

Hi, Thanks for your replies and support. Just finished a pre-op assessment this morning for a knee operation on Monday (never rains but it pours!) and the surgeon is happy to go ahead with it. Was concerned that he would want to put it off until my predisolone dosage was a bit more stable. However, he's happy and he's the expert  . Will keep you posted. And thanks again for the support. (By the way, hope I'm putting this in the right place on the site!!) Apologies in advance if not. :?

Hello again Lizzie Ellen - so sorry to hear about your forthcoming knee operation (as if just being diagnosed with PMR wasn't enough!). As far as the steroid dosage is concerned, I don't know what dose you are on at present but hopefully you will be having just a local anaesthetic as I was informed by my rheumatologist that if I ever needed surgery whilst on Prednisolone, in the case of a general anaesthetic the dose should be increased on the day of surgery and for a few days afterwards, whereas in the case of a local anaesthetic the dose could remain the same. Lots of good luck wishes for next Monday. MrsO

Hi Mrs O. Thanks for your good wishes and information. I am having a general anaesthetic but after long discussion with my consultant yesterday and the surgeon this morning they don't seem unduly worried. Mainly because I've only been on Prednisolone for 3 weeks and am not yet dependent on it. I can't take the Predisolone on the morning of the operation as I'm first on the list and so can't eat or drink from the previous evening. I'm told that I will have a hydrocortisone injection prior to the anaesthetic. I've been hobbling around on my crabby knee for so long now that I just want to get it done and dusted so am going to put all my faith in the medics. Its a case of hold my nose and jump  Just hope I'm not too stiff to climb on the operating table!! Will let you know how I get on.

Hi again Lizzie Ellen - I hadn't realised that you had only recently started taking Prednisolone therefore not necessitating an increase in the dose for the general anaesthetic, so it sounds like good sense to get in there quick with the op before your body adapts to the steroids. It sounds like you're in good hands with both your consultant and your surgeon, and I'm sure that's one pain which you will be glad to get rid of! Best wishes, MrsO
