Fistulogram for Anal Fistula

Hello All, 

From last 8 years I got fissure, a small tinny opening which is not at all problematic, it discharge occasionally very little and manageable. I treated that with homeopathic medicine.

On August 2017 I got an abscess and it drained as a daytime surgery. On February 2018 I found there is a tube formed underneath the skin,the skin burst of its own and converted to a fistula which drains watery blood n puss. After each bowel movement some bloody substance comes out of the new opening. 

I went to a colon rectal surgeon and he examined the spot and said to do a fistulogram, when he inserted some kind of instrument into the fistula opening it went in 9 cm up.

Has any one had same kind of situation ? Is fistulogram is safe and effective option to know the depth of the fistula branches.I’m male 37, athletic, married.

Please advise.
