Flare up

I HAVE BEEN USING CLOBETASOL OINTMENT FOR A FEW MONTHS. IT WAS HELPING BUT I HAD A SEVERE SINUS INFECTION A WEEK AGO AND HAD TO TAKE AN ANTIBIOTIC (Z PAK) for 6 days. Today my vulva is beet red and burning. I wonder if the antibiotic caused this flare up. I also think there is a black mark on the vulva. i am waiting to hear back from my Dr. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi Susan, I agree that using Clobetasol long-term is not an ideal. Just to point out I have used it for almost 8 years with no side-effects or other issues from it. I use it as frequently as necessary to keep my skin as healthy as possible. Sometimes this means using it every other day, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day depending on whether I am sexually active.

In the last few weeks I have found that Aloe Vera Gel is supporting my genital skin to be more healthy and has helped to heal an area of skin that had not been healing correctly, this was on an area where I do not use the Clobetasol.

Actually, Nancy K B suggested I mix 2 tablespoons of the Aloe Vera Gel with 4 - 6 drops of Essential Turmeric Oil (store in sealed container) and early indications are that this is working very well. It could well soothe inflamed skin - but it is certainly keeping my skin hydrated and healthy looking to the point where I have reduced the Clobetasol to once every fourth day.

Hi Susan, as I say things are in the early states of using Aloe Vera Gel regularly, and, Nancy K B's suggested mix shows great promise too, it even smells nice too!

In terms of the scarring I have - as my symptoms had been developing over a period of years there is scarring, and the white patches do re-appear if I had not used the Clobetasol for a few days.

As I keep acknowledging, as Men only have a relatively small area of skin that gets infected, in comparison to Women, we are lucky that such a small amount of skin gets disfigured and has to be constantly treated. While it is the foreskin area that the symptoms appear, the skin of the head of the penis is infected too, and is prone to easily being damaged, and this can take between 3 or 4 weeks to even several months for damaged skin to repair.

What I hope will happen is that the Aloe Vera Gel mixed with the Essential Turmeric Oil will allow me to rely less on the Clobetasol, long-term. In terms of you trying this, maybe there are different qualities of the Aloe Gel, or perhaps even the essential oil?

My guide in using the clobetasol would be to try to prevent a flare-up - certainly for me, flare-ups occurred when I had not been using the Clobetasol regularly enough. However, I know judging it correctly may be easier said than done, particularly if you want to restrict the amount of Clobetasol for safety concerns and suchlike.

In terms of Vitamins and mineral supplements I only take Vitamin D3 and Zinc at the moment - while I feel this really has given me no noticeable change, I would like to step-up what I am taking. Essentially, what this may further do is allow me to be even less reliant on the Clobetasol in the future ...

Do you have a Vitamin and Mineral Supplement regime that works for you and can recommend ?

Thank you for sharing. I have pretty much followed most of the suggestions and findings on Nancy KB’s list. I switch off on the creams, gels, etc., to see what combo works best for me in between using Clobestol for those impossible outbreaks.

I am taking D3, Biotin, A and B12. I am looking for liquid vitamins for the others that Nancy recommends as I have trouble swallowing large pills. I see a difference with Biotin for my nails, but not really with the LS.

I’m asking my doctor this week if she can recommend a nutritionist or homeopathic person to help with the vitamins. Also going to see what vitamin deficiency’s exist in my body and then supplement.

      I”ll keep you apprised.

antibiotics kill all the good bacteria in your whole system and gut and leaves yeast to take over. yeast infections can cause burning itching . also yeast in mouth called thrush. for mouth rx for liquid nystatin. and for burning and itching monostate cream over the counter used 14 days . follow the directions on the box. next time you have to take anti biotics ask for anti virual called fluconazole, this will protect the good bacterial from eradication and keep a good bacteria balance in the gut and prevent yeast infections. it happen to me every time antibiotics were needed so i now ask for fluconozole and never have the yeast issues especially when it can be so miserable. it only takes one pill of fluconozle taken with the first antibiotic to prevent yeast infections.

I would bet that the redness and burning is from a yeast (thrush) infection. The steroid ointments we use make us susceptible to those. I kept thinking my LS was worsening this past summer but it was yeast. I took several rounds of Diflucan and now mix a little over the counter yeast infection cream with my steroid and am down to being able to use my steroid once a week.
