flashes of light after cataract surgery

I had cataract surgery two and a half months ago on one eye and one and a half months ago on the other eye. About a couple of weeks ago I started having flashes of light on the outer side of both eyes. The light is kind of like a circle that sometimes starts at the bottom and travels upward and sometimes starts at the top and travels downward. Has anyone had this experience after having had cataract surgery this long ago?

Hi
I get light flashes frequently when I move my head fast in the dark, but the flashes I get is like the outer edge of a oval,at the top and bottom,I assume it's the outer edge of the lens. The surgeon told me it was common with some patients and told me it would go away over time.

If you haven;t already, call your surgeon and discuss the exact symptoms. You didn't mention if the flashes occur only if your eyes are open and light is present or even when closed and dark but it's important to determine this.
Most flashes are benign but not all of them so you need to rule out any retina or other more serious issues right away. Time can be important in these cases.
I had what felt like flashes to me from the sides of my eye but it it turned out to be edge glare. Keeping my head perfectly still stopped the "flash", it didn't happen when I closed my eyes, and it stopped if I held my head and gaze perfectly fixed. These were the symptoms my surgeon used to decide it wasn't a concern.

what do you mean by outer side? mine starts at the edge of the normal glare and travels upwards. mine started at 6 days post op.
i could not be corrected to better than 20/50 so had to do it.
happens only in low light night conditions. i will be exploring alphagan and pilocarpine dropa shortly to constrict the pupils. these last for 8 hours so i really need something that lasts for 4 hours.

checking retina is a good advice. also with day light savings its getting darker earlier hence you notice more.

I also had cataract surgery on my both of eyes, which was badly needed. Before the surgeries I also had the flashes of light in my peripheral vision in my left eye, It looked like fireworks. The problem was I had a torn retina, requiring emergency surgery. I only mention this because you stated you were having flashes of light. If you are having these and also if you are seeing what looks like tangled black thread floaters, then you should seek medical help right away.

Hi Barbara, I had cataract surgery in June and experienced white flashes immediately with eyes open and closed. I was told the same as everyone else "it happens to some people". lo and behold on my last checkup on Oct. 2nd the doctor said my vitreous layer pulled or let go and that was what caused the white flashes. This also happened in my other eye, the one I haven't had cataract surgery on, about 3 years ago and caused the same systems and I was told at that time (age 66) that can happen with age. As the vitrous layer heals it creates a wrinkle in your eye or at least that's what my doctor said. My flashes have gone away now but the floaters that I didn't see with the cataract are now very visible and annoying.
Check with your doctor, the Vitreous layer in your eye may have done the same thing as mine.

The term for what you are describing is Posterior Vitreous Detachment, usually abbreviated as PVD. The symptoms can be similar to a retinal tear or detachment, so the advice is to see a retina specialist within 24 hours of occurrence.
I still see an occasional light flash from the PVD I experienced months ago, so technically I guess I'm still experiencing the PVD. I also have an annoying large floater called a Weiss ring that I may look into getting laser zapped in the future.
