Flexibility

Hi everyone. Just wanted to find out how much flexibility you got back and how long after surgery. For example , I'd really like to be able to tie my left shoe again and put on socks. Im 7 weeks out from surgery and doing my exercises as well as hitting the gym for stationary bike 3 times a week. I feel strong, but not flexible.

Hi I can't really help you as I haven't had my op yet, but you raise an interesting question, I wonder all this myself already, is the stationary bike helpful? I have just been told walking will be best exercise, I hope your recovery is going well, and you get your answer 😃

I think the stationary bike has been helpful, but I also walk every day and do my physio exercises. ... I want to try the eliptical next, just waiting for pt to approve that one. I am returning to work on August 19 ... if all goes well so hoping for the best by then (will be 3 months post op at that time)

I started PT 2 weeks after surgery. Have been doing the exercises every day. I have a variety of them given to me by the PT and now have started at the gym.

    Hi Carol

I have had two hips done in the last six months and i still cant put on my socks without a sock aid i can get my shoes on and my ankle brace and also fasten laces but I suppose every one is different, I have other issues so my recovery is slow, i hope you can get your flexibility back soon? Sounds like you are doing okay take care and best of luck

I don't remember my time line for regaining some flexibility. Some people are going to tell you that within a short period of time they were able to do everything and more than before! I would suspect that my recovery was more the norm. Now two years out from the first one and one year from the second one, I'm able to put on my socks, cut my toe nails, etc. At seven weeks you probably have a few months to go before you get that flexibility back in your hip. Don't worry. It will come!

HI carol, If you had a hip replacement I can not accurately answer. i had a pinning with screws after a fracture near the ball of the hip.

it has been three months now, and I am in PT. It wasn't until recently that I could put my sox on. So sore, tight and stiff. It is like all my muscles seized up. I now stretch daily to get the muscles to learn to be loose again. i think it takes time for the brain to readjust and realize that things can go back to normal again.

stretching every day is so important

Agree... It is like we have to retrain our muscles not to stiffen every time we move.

    Hi there

Im 7 mths post op and after years of not wearing sneakers because i couldnt do them up and also buying slip ons i have bought a new pair of lace up sneakers because i can lean down and tie them up which is ridiculously exciting for me. I cant remember when i could do that by but at 3mths i was still struggling. Flexibility has been insidious and felt slow. All the best with your recovery.

I know what it is like to get excited about these things. After surgery when I was able to sit in a chair without pain I was ecstatic! The simple things we used to take for granted are now blessings.
