Flickering light after cataract surgery

Posted , 26 users are following.

I have seen a few discussions about this, but I was wondering...of those who saw this subside, how long did it take? Days, weeks, months? I have had surgery on both eyes, but only see the flickering in the left. It's been 4 weeks, and it is slightly better, but only slightly. Just wondering how long I should give myself to adjust?  Thanks

Yes I know exactly what you are saying.  It appears like a bad florescent light that is flickering/going bad. I had it for about 7 months post cat surgery.  At that time, I had PRK to correct my IOLs that were to strong.  I believe the bad refraction/Rx was causing glare and flicker.  Once I had PRK done much better.  I can go into Home Depot now and not cringe.  Soooo.....is your RX correct with your new IOLs?

For now, I am not using any correction. Near and  intermediate vision is excellent. Distance is ok.  See MD in 2 weeks for status and will see where I stand. (Biggest result for me is the Symfony lens in right eye)

I'm 10 weeks into surgery and still have the black Rim/Shadow and flashing light in the corner of my left eye and no improvement as of yet,I had YAG treatment on my right eye with very little improvement if any and resulted in double vision which I didn't have before and also have cloudiness in my left eye also. I was told by the surgeon the black Rim/shadow should go away within 4 months. I didn't like the should part, what does that tell a person. Not very confident!

I just had cataract surgery in my left eye on 6/14/18 and am experiencing flickering light from outside corner of my eye. I'm glad I found this website and now know I am not alone in this problem. My doctor said it's "normal" (don't think so) for some people to experience this and it could go away in a few days to a month. I am scheduled to have my right eye done next week and am thinking I should cancel it. It's sounds like some of you have had this issue for some time now. I've been wearing the patch they sent me home with and don't have an issue with the flashing while wearing it (just a dent in my face) but flashing returns when I remove the patch. Doctor also told me to watch for any grey or black shadow on outer edge or from the bottom edge and to call immediately because it could mean retina detachment. Scared the S*** out of me. Andrew did you have the left eye done first and if so you decided to go ahead with the right eye?

Don't cancel is my advice. I have had both eyes done over the past 2 years and I have no regrets. My vision is better than it has ever been. That said, I do get halos around bright pin sources of light at night ( my optician says that it is a consequence of an open pupil in dark conditions and hard edged IOLs) and, as stated above, I get occasional flickering from bright side lights - such as LED strip lighting in supermarkets.

Thanks David, did you get flickering in both eyes after surgery or just the left? My other concern with the right eye is the vitreous layer detached and I now have what the doctor called a wrinkle in that eye. He says cataract surgery can still be done safely but now I'm hesitant because of the problem w/left eye. My left eye was normal except for the cataract.

Both eyes, but it isn’t something that I now worry about. FWIW, I also get more ocular migraines than I did before having cataract surgery. Arguably, these are more annoying than the occasional light flicker. At the end of the day, it comes down to how much trust you have in your eye surgeon. I was advised by my optician to choose a cornea specialist. It was something to do with advanced skill sets within the eye specialism.

I was incredibly nervous about my decision to go forward, but yes, I had the right eye done 2 weeks after the left. I used a different lense in the right eye (Symfony). It was planned from the start to use a different  lens. Anyway, the right eye does not have this issue fortunately. **my doctor has told me the flickering should subside within 3 months. He seemed to think having the right eye may quicken the “neural adaptation”**

Did a cornea specialist do your surgery? I chose a well respected ophthalmologist who has performed this surgery for many years. He actually performed 15 that day I think I was #13. Sorry you are having headaches from it now. I have a big decision to make before this Thursday. My doctor told me to do my pre-surgery drops and if I want to cancel I can cancel even the day of surgery. Thank you for your input.

      Hi Marinasmile

Wondering if you've seen a retina specialist about the "wrinkle". I'm not familiar with that.

Personally, If I were that nervous about the 2nd eye surgery, I would definitely postpone. Your left eye will still be in major healing mode for a few weeks to 2 months, and possibly even some healing and adjusting after that. Any kind of surgery poses some degree of trauma for the body. It will all go more smoothly if you are not feeling any stress at the time of the 2nd surgery.

For me, I wanted to have one eye working fine (with contact lens) for sure, no matter what happened with my first eye, so I planned from the beginning to wait for 2 months for the second eye while the first eye healed. The cataract in my left eye was significantly worse than the one in the right eye is.

Many surgeons push for the 2nd surgery right away but that seems to be more about their business  income model, rather than about a medical necessity. I consulted with 3 surgeons before choosing the 3rd. When I said I wanted to wait, 2 out of the 3 had no problem with that.

Also, thanks to my first doc consult and the generous posting by various people on this forum's Symfony threads, I chose to do the monofocal IOl in my (dominant) left eye set for distance, and the Symfony in my right eye set for slightly better near and intermediate vision. So I want to be sure of the ~final vision in my left eye before the surgeon chooses the power for my right eye.

Wishing you a peaceful recovery and decision process.smile

Best wishes to you.  Will be looking forward to your update posts.   Interesting combo!  I am sure I won’t be only one.

Thanks, Sue.An! You're one of the people I want to thank for all your posts regarding the Symfony lens! Tho I know you have 2 Synfony, I read that others had done this combo to minimize the effect of starbursts/spiderwebs in the Synfony eye. I'll let you know my experience in a few months.smile

What the doc is calling a wrinkle is that 2 years ago my vitreous layer in right eye detached or slipped which I was told is age related and nothing had to be done to correct it. So what happens in this eye is I get this wave of a clear like film that washes over my eye several times a day. It does not affect my vision its more of a nuisance.  I was also told that this will be more pronounced after having cataract removed. Hence my apprehension in going forward with surgery and coupled with what's going on in the post surgical left eye I'm not sure what I want to do. surgery is tomorrow!
