Flu Jab

I am on Pred and was wondering if I should have a flu jab, as one doctor told me last year it could have been the jab that started my Polymyalgia

I had the flu shot last week. I was told that it was important to do this since our immune systems are not up to par due to the prednisons. Hmmm, I rather question why a doctor would say that it could have caused the PMR. If is not a live vaccine, so I woudln't think it could cause anything like that.

It may be some of the preservatives or other additives in some vaccines could cause problems for some people. I think, for example, there were questions being raised about the use of aluminum salts in flu vaccines because of the possible connection between aluminum and alzheimers, the thinking being it not a good idea to expose the elderly to aluminum in this way if it might cause brain problems. I don't know if there has been any research on this. I suppose it's possible that some vulnerable individuals could have reactions like the development of PMR, but perhaps not without other stressors as well?

Yes, I basically think the anti-vaxxers are way off base. Instead of rejecting vaccinations they could be more productively occupied in trying to get some of the additives out. It would no doubt make vaccination more expensive, but if the additives are causing medical problems then they should be eliminated where possible. In Canada, thimerosol is not used in pediatric vaccines except for the flu vaccine. But that implies it's in adult vaccines. Time "they" realized that many adults are vulnerable too.

I've been on steroids for 15+ years and have been having a flu jab for a lot longer than that. I've never had any problems, but then it's not going to give me PMR, is it? I've already got that!

Yes diagnosed with PMR at 57 following a very gradual onset - talking years here - now 72, and it's got used to me now and doesn't want to leave. OK by me, I have multiple other medical conditions, so what's one more? Am living a 'normal' (I prefer typical) life and very content.

Being on pred lowers your immune system and you are even more at risk of getting flu and if you do, fighting it will be harder. That's why you should have the flu jab.

I developed GCA three days after an infusion of Reclast. Some of my doctors believe it acted as a catalyst for the GCA since my mother had lupus and I was probably predisposed to autoimmune. Why didn't the doc think of this before giving it to me. I do continue to get a flu shot each year especially since I'm on three drugs knocking my immune system down.
