Fludrocortisone - is all the extra salt still needed?

Posted , 4 users are following.

This question is for anyone taking fludrocortisone because they do not produce aldosterone naturally.

I do not have Addison's disease as I produce sufficient cortisol, but I cannot produce the other adrenal hormone aldosterone.

I have just started taking fludrocortisone tablets and wonder if others taking it for adrenal replacement are still advised to chug litres of extra water and salt or whether you can go back to eating and drinking normally once you are on treatment.

I would have thought & hoped it is the latter.

Many thanks

I have been on that medication for over 20 years now and I have never been told to increase my salt/water intake. Although upping water intake is never a bad thing 😉

I have the exact same condition and it is very rare.  It took me 4 months to get adapted to fludrocortisone, I hope you get better results.  If you are like me, I started peeing a lot up to 8,5 liters a day at the worst of it.  My wife is a nurse and had me chugging Pedia-lite to replace the fluid and electrolyte losses.  You need to be careful with salt because it AND fludrocortisone can increase your blood pressure. I had to cut the 0.1 mg fludrocortisone in half and take half in the morning and half in the evening, because my fluid output really increased during the night, so much tha I was up every hour.  You need to get a urinal to measure your output and balance that with your intake.  If you get dehydrated or fluid overloaded, it can be very dangerous. You also need to monitor your blood pressure frequently to keep from getting hypo-volemic, another form of dehydration that can be present even when  you seem to have taken in more fluid than you are putting out.

I can go into more details, but please let me know your symptoms, etc. to see if you need more info.

I'm lucky enough to be off the fludro now for 10 months, but was on it for 1-1/2 years.

It is a very interesting point the one you make...  I have adrenal insufficiency or Addison's disease (they  cannot get to the bottom of this...) but I have enough fludrocortisone, I cannot advice you. Hope someone can.
