Fluoxetine meltdown, help!!

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hi so I've been on fluoxetine for a couple of weeks after a long period of depression. I've been on it before but i don't remember the side effects being so intense.

I feel like my brain is on fire, I feel like I'm going to die of a stroke. I feel hot and cold flushes and then my heart is racing and I start crying and I'm just terrified I am going to die.

Obviously I haven't died but I'm starting to think not being here would be better than feeling so awful. Will it get better? I'm a nurse and feel like a complete let down because i should be coping better.

just need some reassurance.

thanks x

Hi Camille thanks for replying. I'm just on 20mg, what about you? I am just fluctuating between feeling okay then feeling like I am going to die and really need to go to A&E. Its really scary, because I need to be working but I'm struggling with that at the minute.

    Hello

yes the side effects are just awful, I have had those hot flushes in my chest and like I am on fire, yes I think it does effect the head, I also had terrible shakes no appetite and no sleep, just awful, they seem to go on for ever.

i was on fluoxetine many years ago, I can remember not feeling nice but not so many side effects that has lasted so long, I get one or two good days and then go back to low mood again and no interest in anything. most people I have spoken to say they have experienced the same, one day you think your getting better and the next day very negative.

I think it took longer than the 4-6 weeks last time so expect it may take longer second time around, but I try to think positive even if I dont feel it, keep telling myself you will get better.

How long have you been on the tablet and what strength did you start at, I had two good days Mon and Tues but today a bit on the edge, for the past two days I felt hungry but today not so much, it doesnt feel right today, had some bad hot flushes running through my body, its a strange feeling.

Most people have said you get some good days and then not so good.

I have been on fluoxetine for 5 weeks, started on 20m and last two weeks on 40m.

look forward to hearing from you.

thanks so much for responding . i started at 10 then 20 and now 30 for the past 2 weeks . i had a the worst few days including a huge panic attack this morning ..... never had one before . im sure hoping things change here as i cant take it much longer . hopefully your good days come back . Are you happy with your progress ?

So how long have you been on them in total, the problem is with every increase comes the side effects again.

I dont think anyone is happy with there progress until all the days are good days, I get a few days when the low mood has lifted and then I go back to having low mood again, these drugs take time, some people get better after a few weeks and for some its months.

The drugs take time and you need to keep fighting, I say to myself you have got better before so you will again, I went from someone who enjoyed going out for a meal to someone who havent been out for weeks

I am normally a happy person but this feeling of sadness just makes you feel down.

But you need to fight this.

How are you today? It sounds like you're going through what I went through. Key word - WENT through. In other words it WILL pass and get better, but it wont happen overnight.

Fluoxetine is a fantastic medication but needs time to work! Remember it altering the chemical make up of your brain, so you will have periods of extreme psychological malfunctions (thats what I called them!) Try and think of it as the meds doing their job. They are working. Eventually they will get the formula right, and you can look forward to being happy and contented again. It might take two weeks, it might take ten weeks, but it WILL get there.
