Flushing causing AF

Posted , 3 users are following.

I have been having terrible hot flushings which brings on my atrial fibrillation - I wake up most mornings around 5 am and start AF.    During the day I seem to have them every half an hour or so.   I am well passed the menopause so it is not that.    I have had loads of tests which have proved negative and my GP says they may never find what it causing them!!  I am becoming somewhat depressed as  I have spasmodic AF and the AF usually lasts about 4 hours, but I feel very tired and weak afterwards.   I feel I cannot arrange anything as I do not know when the attacks happen.   I would be grateful for any comments or help.

I had PAF attacks for over five years and also would waken up around 5.0 am flushed and with a rapid heartbeat. Cardiologists just gave me more medication. Eventually diagnosed years later with mild Sleep Apnea and since starting CPAP therapy have had no AF episodes for two years. Get tested for Sleep Apnea as there is a strong link between the two conditions .

Time to see a cardiologist specialising in AF methinks! AF needs no other cause than a misfiring of electrical signals in the heart. Some of us may have triggers to AF but not all.  Four hours every day is too long to be in AF. Has your GP prescribed an anticoagulant to prevent a stroke?  Should have done by now. You have paroxysmal AF and its important to stop  it becoming permanent as a catheter ablation does not well nearly as well if you reach his stage.

And yes an AF episode can be very debilitating - can knock you out for quite a period afterwards. Are you near a large teaching hospital? Best to be referred to a large cardiology department where there will be AF specialists.

I am near a large teaching hospital and have been under a cardiologist since 2008 for spasmodic AF.   I am on Warfarin and also a betablocker.  There is talk of ablation (which I am not keen to have as I know one or two people who have been treated this way unsuccessfully and I believe it is not all that pleasant).   However my GP has referred me back to the cardiologist querying a pacemaker!!!   However I am still having these flushings which are not pleasant.   I have been seen by an endocrinologist who sent me for various tests all proving negative!!!
