Flying after achilles rupture

Posted , 5 users are following.

It is noiw 16 weeks since I ruptured my achilles playing badminton. I did not have surgery and am now walking without crutches, although it is still stiff and weak and I have a limp. I also still have a lot of swelling around my ankle and foot and wonder whether this will get worse by flying, as I am soon going on holiday?

    Hi Mate

Are you wearing any special boot? Like normal black strap sandal?

No, I was in the aircast book from the beginning and was non weight-bearing til Week 9, then walked in the boot for 3 weeks with crutches and have been without the boot for the last 4 weeks. It's all going well but i just wondered about flying?

I would suggest you to contact your GP!! Safe is better than sorrysmile

If you have swelling flying is a risk I would say but advice from a GP would be good.

I'd not worry about flying.  It may swell, but it should not stunt your progress.  If it swells flying, elevate it and ice it asap.  I'd do cold therapy and elevation as much as possible while on vacation.  I like the bigger cold packs and then I tightly wrap them with an ace bangage around my ankle.  Try a compression sock (especially while flying) if you have not already.  Your game plan should be to get the swelling down, keep it loose and stretched, and continue the strenthening everyday.

Thanks Danny, I didn't think it would be a problem but you get a bit paranoid about it. Having gone through 4 months of grief, I don't want any setbacks! Thanks

Hi matin, I  am 6 weeks post op from a ruptured AT, I am in a airboot still but hoping to come out tomorrow when I see the doc!! I have just got back from holiday in Spain! I had no issues at all with flying, all aound my ankle area swells up dependant on the length of time I am on my feet and that is at home and while I was away, although it remained swollen most of the time I was away the the flight didn't cause any issues! I would recommend special assistance in the airport though to manage to stairs up and down the craft! Hope this helps!

Hi - I went to the hospital on Monday (2 weeks post-op) and actually asked about flying as I need to fly ~ 9 hours with work mid-/ end-August. The Dr actually said I can fly now if I wanted to, which surprised me. I won't be flying right now ... mid-August at the earliest. (I would be 8-9 weeks post-op).

Anyone else flown so early? Any tips?

    Thanks!
