Flying after dvt - precautions?

Posted , 2 users are following.

Hi, I've had a few discussions on this site and replies have been invaluable to me. I am now asking if anyone has taken a short haul flight, no more than 4 hours, after having a DVT and no longer taking an anticoagulant. My DVT was caused by birth control, would this make a difference to having one from flying in the first place? Any info would be great, I've heard some people are given injection to take with them and use a couple of hours before the flight but think its only if the first was extremely serious. Look forward to any replies.

Hi, I haven't had any experience yet of flying since my DVT but I will be flying after Xmas for 10 hours. I wear the compression stockings all the time which I find really help. The doctor that I saw at the hospital said it would be fine as long as I follow the guidelines of wearing the stockings, no alcohol, keep drinking water, and move about when possible. Also an aisle seat helps as you can stretch your legs. Hope this helps.

Hi Jane, thanks for replying and informing me of how your going about it. I was never given compression socks, maybe because I didn't have any swelling in my calf. I was thinking of purchasing some on the net but then read they aren't correct if your not measured for them. I hope you have a great time away, and as your flight is going to be double or triple my flight time if I book something, I'm hoping all will be fine following the information you have told me. It's just a hurdle I need to overcome. Enjoy your trip! and hope you have a great time.

Hi, I never had any swelling at all in my calf but you are given stockings to wear automatically here  for 2 years. I live in Bristol. I would get measured at a chemist and definitely wear some on your flight . Good luck !!

Thanks Jane, I live in Blackpool and they were never mentioned or given whilst spending 1 week in hospital or at any doctor surgery appointments, I'll have a word with my chemist and see what they say. Thanks again.
