Flying tommorow asthma and chest infection symptoms

Posted , 6 users are following.

hi just looking for some advise as I am really panicking.

This morning I have woken up with asthma symptoms and scratchy soar chest and cough. Feeling unwell and short of breath.( I am serve asthmatic) I am currently on 4.5mg prednisone, revlar, spiriva, and obviously salbutamol. I always have spare antiobiotics so started to take these as well. I am really panicking about the flight as I know the altitude can affect oxygen levels. If I'm struggling now will it be worse? Does anyone know what options I have expect taking more prednisolne or cancelling my holiday?

Annie's go onto a large dose of steroid. 40mg per day and double your preventative drugs as well.

If you have a nebuliser do that every four hours.

If I'm trouble you can always get oxygennon the flight.

    Good luck!!

Thanks for your reply Liz, I do not have a nebuliser if I booked an emergency apt at docs in the morn as I'm not flying too the evening is that something I can access through a GP? My oxygen sats ATM are sitting between 96-98.

I am under a specialised hospital in London waiting for a new drug to come available in may and they are funny about me taking anymore pred without seeing me. So I'm just so confused what to do. Also do all planes have extra oxygen onboard don't know if your based in England but I'm flying with Ryan air. My son has had a chest infection and unfortunately has passed it on to me.

      Hi Anni

I don't think you can get a nebuliser from the Drs. You can but ask!

What new drug? I've been having xolair injections for the past 12 years and it's changed my life.

I am in the U.K. If you want more info let me know. I get them done in Chertsey.

      Enjoy your holiday. Very jealous!!

      hi liz

the new drug coming available in may is called mepolizumab. It's an injection once a month and is targeted at allergic asthma. I'm really hoping this drug will also change my life!

      Thank you xx

Anni, seriously, are you sure you are well enough to go on a flight?

If you are panicking like this, you are in more than a bit of trouble.

    Hi Anni

This may well be too late for you but I would try to see your GP this morning.

Firstly, he/she will assess your capability to fly and be OK on holiday.

Secondly, the practice should be able to give you a couple of nebulisers which will help you right now.

If your GP thinks you are not wise to gly then follow his/her advice, annoying 'though it can be.

I have 'been there/done that' having to abort a trip on the morning of the trip - asthma/chest infection flared up.

It may well be that your GP thinks that you will be OK to fly/be away but check it all out for safety.

Let us know how you fare?

    Regards

      Hi Grammybea

i have seen my GP this morning he said it's up to me whether I go but has given me the all clear. My numbers are fine and he is happy for me to travel and reassured me that if I get into trouble there is oxygen onboard the plane. He has also given me some prednisolne as an emergency while away to take and also more antibiotics even though he believes it to be viral.

Am hoping the sunshine will help shake this virus off. Thank you everyone for your advise xx

      Hi Anni

      Good news!

      Many thanks for the update.

Go away and relax in some lovely sunshine (Spanish medical care is pretty good if push should come to shove, so don't worry, just enjoy your holiday!).

      Regards

Hello sorry for the late reply I just noticed it. But tell me how the flight went ? I know they have oxygen ready if you need it. I am sure they have had to deal with other ppl with breathing problems flighing. Hope everything went well.

Hi the flight went fine thank lord but was ill the whole trip with a cold soar throat and

Chest infection which creeped out day after landing. I felt the affects more so on the return flight when I felt short of breath but my inhalers worked and as it was a short flight wasn't too bad. Thanks for asking.
