Folate and MCH

Hi

Had a recent blood test about 7 weeks ago as part of my Doctor's general screening of people over 35 years and the lab results highlighted a couple of things...

Serum Folate - low - deficiency - 3ug/l

Mean Corpusc Haemoglobim - low - 25.9pg

I have been exhausted, foggy minded, irritable etc for months now but have put this down to having an ileostomy which disturbs my sleep as well as still having daily blood loss from what's left of my colon thanks to Ulcerative Colitis, having a chronic cough which is exhausting and of course all the general life stuff like having a child, job, housework etc.

My doctor has not recalled me over these results I just requested a copy for my own interest but I have started taking 5mg folic acid supplement but have no idea if that would be enough to raise it sufficient given my existing medical condition.

Anyone got any ideas if these results are significant or not?

Many thanks in advance :-)

Its always useful to see the full set of results.  I suspect one or more of your b12, iron, ferritin or haemogloblin might be tending towards the low side of the range.

Hi Jenny, thank you for the reply by B12 is actually well within range, which surprised me as its something that can dip with an ileostomy. My ferritin is reasonable at 30, it's been as low as 5 in the past but since an iron infusion a couple of years ago been pretty consistent. My haemoglobin is in range too at 122. So nothing alarming. I think I might just have to accept the fatigue is just part and parcel of having chronic illness and enjoying life.

Lots of people can be low on b12 whilst being within range. It's the active b12 that important and lots won't test for that so it's possible that you are low in b12. Folate and b12 deficiency quite often goes together. The body needs b12 to absorb folate. Your ferritin is low end the range is something like 20 -200. You would want it to be at least 70 (lots experience hair loss at 30). Why not book a follow up appointment as you do not want to to become anaemic (as you have had iron deficiency anaemia before?).

Not everyone with your results will have your symptoms but most that do feel much better once they raise their levels. Good luck.

That's interesting about the B12, you would have thought given my ileostomy they would have done the more thorough test for active B12, I guess their thinking isn't always joined up though. Yes, I think I shall make an appointment, thank you for your advice really appreciate it :-)
