Follow up six weeks -- MTP Joint Big Toe fusion

Hi guys,

Well my six week post op was today! And I think it went pretty good.

I had a few questions I was hoping my doc had time to answer.

One: Is it normal to feel like your toe is going to have a charlie horse?   YES! He said its like any joint that wants to crack but it can't so it gives the feeling of charlie horsing.

Two: after walking for a good 40 mins is it normal to feel very bad pain on the whole foot including the surgery site?

YES!!  According to him I am a bit ahead of schedule of with walking that distance and so on.  He said its a bit to fast. Told me to slow down some and that I'm not "fused" yet... he told me to take the meds if I need them and to keep on keeping on but just to scale back some. Don't want to ruin his work!

My plate is aligned nicely and screws are where they are suppose to be. I'm still not working and honestly in no rush to go back. I can't imagine standing on my feet right now.

I did have a reconstruction on my right ankle in November of 17 and that isn't quite healed yet... so I'm working on both feet healing now.

Best of luck to anyone going through this!

Rose, can you share how you are doing, please?  Am expecting to have same operation, and have posted about it tonight.  But in case you don’tt see it this is what I have said:

Have bunions and pain under ball of the foot. Surgeon thinks that normal bunion surgery will not be satisfactory and that I need fusion of big toe joints to restore good mechanics and provide stability to arch of the foot.

I am finding it hard to understand how well I will be able to do things like squatting and kneeling if big toe does not bend. I will only be able to wear shoes with max 5cm heels- this I have no problem with, nor do I mind if can’t go up on tiptoe but I still want to garden, do my housework and roll around the floor with young grandchildren.

Could anyone who has had successful first toe fusion share with me how it impacts on everyday life, please.

I don’t want horror stories - there are plenty of these on the web! I am confident that the actual result would be ok as am being treated by a top London surgeon but I am not quite getting a feel from him as to how much the fusion will change ordinary activities. So I thought nothing like asking someone who has had it done!
